That's strange, because Apple CarPlay has been standard on the Forester for years now. (So has Android Auto.)

I drove this rental Subaru from Utah to CT after thanksgiving. And as much as I want to hate it, I gotta admit I kinda love it.

I would like it better if it had Apple CarPlay, for GPS reasons, but the Bluetooth connectivity is flawless.

The stock sound system in it is impressive

The headlights that move with the steering wheel are cool

The adaptive cruise control and lane departure assist work flawlessly.

I think I averaged near 35mpg on the trip, while being loaded down with over 1k lbs of boxes inside with me.

If I had to say bad things about it;

Seat heater could be a smidge warmer.

The auto transmission feels like it’s powered by diarrhea.

The seatbelt reminder is obnoxious.

The cup holder sucks.

I feel gay in it.

Really liked my crosstrek, Apple car play only worked plugged in not over Bluetooth adaptive cruise was great lane departure and pre collision warning drove me nuts. Seatbelt chime is annoying you can take it off but cruise won’t work if seatbelt isn’t on. Thought I’d hate the CVT but honestly wasn’t that bad

My wife loves her ‘17 Outback. We bought it new and currently have ~ 80k miles on it. The safety features and all wheel drive give me huge peace of mind when she makes the drive over Soldier Summit to see family in Utah County. I like the adaptive cruise but had to turn off the lane departure warning because I tend to cut corners driving up the canyons. The pre-collision and low visibility warnings are super annoying to me. The Harman/Kardon sound system is nice!

My wife drives a 2016 Legacy sedan and it’s been great so far.

Awd rocks it’s the best out there imho.

I don’t care for the CVT but I’m old school I guess—it has shift points even though it doesn’t shift which I find weird if that makes sense. Meh give me a five speed auto and I’d be happy.

I like that it does not have the eyesight crap, lane assist and adaptive cruise control etc.

I don’t like how the drivers seat has a lot of torn leather that’s pretty stupid imo.

Stock battery size is pathetic. I upgraded to a much larger one and it fits fine with a little trimming (can’t remember the size I’ll check if anyone is interested).

Lots of timing chain noise on startup. Once the pressure hits it mostly goes away but it’s still there. Thinking about going 5w-30 on my next oil change vs. the 0w-20 it call for. It’s been my experience that Subarus are hard on oil.

I hate that it’s not a wagon lol. Trunks are lame 😒.

We’re hovering around 65k miles I think we’ll give it another two years and then go with that new wilderness outback that I’m obsessed with haha!

I called a JDM importer in Layton today and he said he has an EZ30D for me for $1600 but it’s in a warehouse. 50k miles six month warrantee. Problem is he wants me to pay for it first then he’ll order it from his warehouse and a week later I can pick it up… hmm I dunno I’d kinda like to just pick one up and pay for it on the spot instead. Or is that just the way it works?

Anyone know of a good JDM importer that you’d recommend? They’re all over eBay for cheaper I just don’t know if I want to gamble there either.

What do you think I should do in regards to a JDM engine? If I can stay around $900-$1500 I think it’ll be worth it.

On Ebay I assume you'd pay a lot (on top of the advertised price) for shipping, and it sounds like maybe the $1600 won't have additional shipping? Could be a wash in the end.

Also, I assume JDM engines aren't quite common enough to be an on-the-shelf item for most places. His pay-to-order request sounds reasonable to me.

It would be 100% down, then wait a week or so then pickup.

eBay has the engines for around $1200 then $3-400 for shipping. So it’s about even 🤔

Snap-On to the rescue! Made quick work of the small-ish head bolts.

Found the hole that’s half dead! If I turn the crank back and forth there’s slop in that piston. No signs of it hitting the head or valves at this point.

Talked to a few people that see no issue at all with the sludge/discoloration given the mileage of this engine. Pretty typical ‘they say’. Heads are in great shape although I haven’t looked for cracks quite yet.

Hmm I dunno it’s been fun to tear down anyway.

Stupid newbie question, but I’ve always wondered about the oiling in boxer engines.
Does the “top” side of the cylinder walls show like it has any more wear than the “bottom” sides, like from less oil film on the wall? Or is that not really an issue.

I dunno it’s a good question though. I’ll have to measure the bores on this thing and see if there’s any noticeable difference 🤔

Welp I think I’ve reached the edge of my comfort zone with this tear down. I suppose I could pull the pistons (requires an special tool—besides the one working on this car 😂 ), split the case halves and pull the crank but I dunno.

Here’s how you get the pistons out… There’s a plug on the front of the engine. You pull the plug, use magic to get the wrist pin clips out, special expensive slide hammer type tool to pull the wrist pins and then pull the piston out of the top of the block. Seems like a huge pita haha.
