Vehicle back up cameras

I couldn’t find any discussions on back up cameras.
First of all, my old man self says if you can’t back up to your trailer without one, you are dumb.
Also, I really like having one to back up to my trailer.
I was against them, but really they are helpful and I would like to get one on my kids car.

I have noticed a HUGE difference in quality of resolution in different vehicles I’m in. Is that because of the camera itself or the display? My older ford has a camera on the corner or the mirror and it is better than my mothers brand new full screen infinity camera by far.
The one in my f600 is awesome, but one in a rental escape we had was trash.

I see a ton of ads for the wolf box camera. They had way too many options for me to pick one, but I like the idea of a clip on mirror camera. I think they were about $200. Is that good? Bad?

What have you guys used that is a stand alone system for older vehicles?

I have one on the LJ. Kenwood brand, hooked up to my Kenwood head unit with HD screen. And it was pretty good for about a week. Then I backed it into a rock and scratched the shit out of the lens and it has sucked ever since.

I had a cheap aftermarket camera on the Excursion, it worked great when I could remember to keep the lense clean.

In for reviews on the Wolfbox, I've been thinking about one for the LX but haven't pulled the trigger yet.

It’s just another tool in your toolbox. I use mine all the time. Use all of your tools, but don’t be so proud that you won’t get out and look.

I run one on my truck, it’s aftermarket from a local stereo shop. I helped out at said stereo shop and installed a fair amount of them. The better quality cameras have better picture quality for sure. An aftermarket camera can be interfaced into most head units, even oem ones. Haven’t tried any stand alone units, so not much help there.

I had a Wolfbox on my old Jeep and loved it. It was nice to see the whole picture and not a big 39" spare tire in my rear view mirror. I thought it was adequate as far as picture resolution goes. I liked the fact it had a front camera in case of an accident. The front was fun to look at the videos of off-roading too.

The only problem with it was I couldn't adjust it so I could use both sun visors. I've heard of you space it out a half inch then you can get them to work. I had it adjusted so I could use the passenger visor but the drivers would only come down a couple of inches before it hit the mirror.

Yeah, I don't HAVE to kill my dinner with a rock or dig roots out of the ground with a stick either. Turns out there's a reason we chase technological advancement.

iCamera I think is the brand we've used several times at work from Car Tunes in Ogden and Layton. They seem to hold up fairly well and are easy to install if you have a stereo head unit with the capabilites. I hate standalone screens and have lots of guys complain when the company orders new trucks spec'd with them. They take away a chunk of your visibility in the bigger F series trucks and burn out frequently.

I ended up going with THIS camera. It's a cheap unit. When I asked the girls what kind they wanted, they weren't even interested in one, so I wasn't going to spend much. It had many great reviews, so I went for it.
It took me about 2 hours to install it. about 1.75 of those were trying to run the cable in a decent way to get to the back of the hatch back of the car.
Their car previously had some sort of radio thing and the mount was still in place, so we just stuck the camera there.
I’ve currently just got it plugged into the 12v lighter, so it’s always on with the key. I like that. If I ever do hard wire it, I’ll do a key on power also, not just reverse.



It’s got great clarity, especially for a cheap unit. (cell phone photo, not so great)



It’s got very minimal adjustments, and no extra features. The back up lines can be turned off or adjusted slightly. But not in the way I want them to go. They need to tip down in the back to be accurate.. but meh.



The 6 led lights are on full time on when the camera is on (so always for us) you clip a wire if you don’t want them on. Which I forgot to do, and is now 18 screws, 2 plastic panels, and a chore to get to 🤦🏼‍♂️

That looks good. I’ve been wanting to get a wireless 2 camera setup for my Jeep and that brand has one with good reviews. Hmmmm

I have a wolf box G900 installed in the GX. I replaced my factory mirror with it. It is larger that the factory one but I can still use both visors with out issue. don’t yet have it hooked up to the reverse light which will give the little guiding color scale that most have. I also don’t tow so I can’t speak to that. But you can adjust the angle of the view from the drivers seat. I can also have a Split View front/rear or just front. They say you can use it as regular rear view mirror(without the camera) but the quality of that is not great. Also during certain lighting conditions the “mirror” image is still visible which can make it a pain. I think I’ve gotten used to it though. Anyone is welcome to come check it out. I’m in Lehi.
