Tool storage while on the trail

Some of you chimed in on my FB post a few days ago, but I figured I’d post up here as well-

How are you securing your tools when on the trail? I’m thinking a combination of tool rolls/soft bags to keep everything in order, but then pack those in a hard case that’s mounted to the rig. Obviously, the most important aspect is keeping everything contained, but also as clean as possible, and as quiet as possible.

I’m leaning towards a collection of bags that are then stuffed into a Pack Out box, but I’m open to suggestions.

Here's what I used on my latest round of tool storage upgrades... I think I added these 5 years + ago? So far they are the only bags that haven't worn a hole into them and dropped tools.

I got them in various colors depending on what is in them. The lighter color bags are easier to mark what's in them. They have a snazzy grid that you can write in that won't wear off.

For My vehicle tools I have everything organized in bags for like electrical, hand tools, sockets, wrenches, pliers, emergency, repair supplies, ect. Then I keep it all stored in this pelican 1615 case. Along with some cordless tools like a half inch impact quarter inch impact drill sawzall grinder. It’s pretty big and heavy but easy to move around and nice to have it ready to roll.

Drawers. I've got one drawer dedicated to tools and recovery gear. My hand tools are in a Bucket Boss tool roll, bigger stuff is just kinda crammed in there loose right now. I'm working on another drawer setup to replace these that'll have more room, and those will be better organized.

Not the economical route, but I have put all my stuff in packouts. One of my to do's this winter is to figure out how to secure a packout base in the back of my jeep to keep them from sliding around. Right now I just strap everything down.

This is the way I went too. I've got a couple medium ones and a 2-drawer one. The drawer one has my recovery gear. One medium is misc and the other is my air compressor. I still haven't figured out how to mount them. They are all under my Tuffy Security Deck Enclosure. It mounts to the floor but only with a couple of bolts so I don't know if it would hold up in a rollover. In my old Jeep I had two straps that were across the enclosure to maybe help.

I've used cam buckle cinch straps to hold my various tool bags down in my trail Jeep for the past 2 decades. I just screw the webbing to the metal floor or the wheeltub of the Jeep. I have a bag for spare parts, a really basic and small electrical bag, one for recovery stuff, two bags for tools. I don't carry a LOT of tools but some. Enough to swap an axle shaft or driveline or similar.

Strangely, I've not wanted to do the hole drilling through the floor on my Gladiator. I'm starting to morph into various laptop backpacks that people would return when they left the company I've worked for.

Perfect solution, no, effective and reasonably safe for Jeep occupants, yes.

Those are what I would use also, just need to figure out what to mount them to since the back of the JK has that pull up cover over a small storage compartment. I would probably build something that mounted to the existing floor anchor bolts positions.

Decked drawer in the gladiator with a combo of rolls and packouts inside a decked box. Big packout box in the tow rig. Have a packout soft bag I attach the socket packout to and throw the rolls in for the 2 door adventures. Had small packouts in the sxs as well, they saw all kinds of dirt and moisture, tools were always clean and dry.

Yeah I have packout in mine, best thing I ever did. Made me clean out my other methods and I really like that everything is secure never moves. I have super quick access and everything goes right back where it was quick as well. I do have the cooler as well, it's OK its not a Yeti or any other brand that keeps things ice cold for days but it'll last a trail day. I have organized a few different boxes to have different specific items. All in all its all personal preference right. My only complaint is it is all red good thing it is hidden in the back

My setup looks a bit like Marc's. Zippered power tool bags with my old harbor freight tools pared down to exactly what I need and I don't mind welding to a control arm to fix someone on a trail. They just live in the Jeep ratchet strapped to the floor.

In my truck I've got a plastic toolbox with slider drawers that sandwiches between the back seat and front seat. All the tools snap in so it's reasonably quiet.

Also a Kobalt Modular toolbox system for work stuff that can move to any vehicle I need as well.
