The closer they are to matching, the better--as you said. But plenty of rigs have mis-matched lengths and work fine. (TJ's with Tera steering come to mind.... there's probably 8" of length difference there)

I don't know about Selectro specifically, but every other hub I've seen just wants a thin film of lube, like you said.
