Ideal car for bombing dirt roads?

First generation Ford Escape? I have an '05 V6 AWD with a little over 298k mi. Decent flex, decent ground clearance, 24mpg running 75-80 and I've been able to squeeze over 25 numerous times. I used to travel for work (resulting in the mileage). Daily dirt/mud roads when I was at Barrick Gold...

    Lbryson upcoming ghost town trip

+1 If you end up down south, Stateline in Rice Canyon north of Modena is worth the drive. Road was good. At Frisco, you can drive up to the kilns but even they have a chain link around them. You can explore around there a little bit. 20yrs ago we got up to the 'good stuff' which is now gated...

Trip Report Three Corners To Four Corners

The concrete bunker near Bishop's Tank is known as Seismograph. It was used for the monitoring equipment prior to and during the construction of the Glen Canyon Dam. Its code is "GCA". I have been unable to find any real history on it other than what I was told by my granddad when growing up...

    Lense thoughts?

I don't have any pertinent information to give, just a thank you for posting his ig name. My wife and I both went to school with him in Page. He has posted some nice pictures. Another person based in that area is @lucid_shadow_

    Staying in a camper/trailer for a week+ at a time.

I lived in mine off and on over the years, the longest being 26mo for 5 days a week. I'd set up at the nearest RV Park and pay monthly rates, or in a mobile home park and pay the lot fee and set up the elect bill. Doing this is great because you won't have battery or water anxiety. The smaller...

    TH350 Kickdown on '02 4.3L V6

Could you use a cable clamp bracket off of any older carbureted GM that would mount under an intake bolt? Or flip the bracket and bend/modify to mount it under a valve cover bolt?

I need a steering gearbox solution.

Would you benefit by removing the vacuum actuator on the axle, mechanically locking the CAD, then run the leafs? Or is the spring pack landing in a horrible spot? Then you would need manual hubs to disconnect the front driveshaft. Or do like the '03+ Dodges and let the front driveshaft spin...

    24v ECM failure

If the reman unit fails, use that as an excuse to p-pump it (if county allows). My dad had an 01.5. Over 290k it lost 2 injectors, required 1 injection pump, and a handful of block mounted LPs. Luckily it always made it back to the house under its own power. Overall a great truck. They all...

Air bags on a long arm setup

This is genius. My dad ran a set of these on his truck for a 4400lb pin weight on a horse trailer, but heavier duty than what you'd have on the Jeep. They were quick/easy to remove with just a wrench, even on the side of the highway. Fab a bracket to place the timbren in a spot to help carry...

Air bags on a long arm setup

I've seen trucks run bags that contact a bucket on the axle, and are mounted only to the frame. This allows the axle to drop farther than the bag can extend. There has been a few pictures on the cumminsforum. Don't know if you have enough room to do something like that on a control arm.

    Tandem trailers

Utah allows double with the first being a bumper. Arizona requires the first to be a 5th/goose. Plenty of people cross into AZ at Page (for the lake) and don't get hassled, but could be expensive to attempt a run to Flag +.

    Favorite cold weather gear

511 Tactical Parka if you're ready to spend $300 on a coat. My previous company got some of these for a restart on a mine outside Leadville Co. I was doing electrical commissioning during the winter; -20°F was common. Fleece liner is removable. Water and wind proof outer. Tons of pockets (even...

Help me decide my next project.

I thought the 2wd lift kits for the 73-87 would fit the 67-72 trucks... I just finished a '70 C10 but stock suspension. Fabtech comes to mind. Second thought; are you opposed to a longer than 8' bed? Thoughts on just sticking the C30 sheetmetal on the Dodge chassis? Too bad the donor isn't a...

    Trailer spindle tech and questions

This is what I did on a single axle I used to have. A friend bent it on a pothole and it started eating at the inner part of the tire. I cut out a majority of the spindle weld, then bent/straightened so that it matched the 'good' side using a framing square and a level, then welded back up...

    5.9 Cummins Chug

Is it during an upshift? The 3-4 shift with Tow-haul engaged can cause compressor surge from the fast change in engine speed (torque converter locking immediately after the shift). I hesitate to blame the lift pump. The fuel filter is a quick and easy change. The CP3 is capable of drawing fuel...

    TBI 350 Swap Wiring Question

I'm looking at my 88-98 Chiltons. I've loaned out my Haynes book or I'd compare schematics. Red, brown, and if a 3rd wire 'rust'. Red = battery Brown = alternator indicator. This wire will go to the dash dummy light. The other side of the dummy light is connected to a keyed source. Rust = ties...
