I got a car. Anybody wanna go drive?

Will there be many gas stations along the way which offer Clear 88? I've only got a 17-gallon tank.

Announcing the RME on-air ham radio net

I apologize to... well, everyone. I know I suggested last night, but I had way too much to do and couldn't make time for the net. Even worse, I didn't have a chance to mention it in this thread. Sorry, gang. :(

    Any Mtn Bikers on RME?

I've owned my Marlin 6 for two weeks now. I have diligently managed to get some seat time every day, even if only 30 minutes... though some days have been 2+ hours. When I ride, I try to moderately exert myself--fast enough to get my heart rate up a bit, but not any sort of "race pace" or...

Looking for a topographic map of Mt Nebo & AF Canyon

I found a photo of a "vintage" Trails Illustrated map, and I recognized that logo. Apparently my cherished map has been bought out by/merged with National Geographic and has become a redesigned series like the example I posted above. Hmm. Now I need to see if they still make the map I want.

Looking for a topographic map of Mt Nebo & AF Canyon

ADD'L INFO: my map carried the US Forest Service logo. (I'm still frantically Googling.)

Looking for a topographic map of Mt Nebo & AF Canyon

Back in the mid 1990s, I bought a kick ass topographic map. It was printed on water-resistant, tear-resistant paper. On one side was Mt Nebo Loop and all the bike/hiking trails found there (which was why I bought it--I used to bike there a lot). On the other side was a map of the entire...

    Any Mtn Bikers on RME?

Something I learned while shopping for my new bike: bicycles have GVW ratings. Two weeks ago, I had no idea.

    Any Mtn Bikers on RME?

This is all Kevin's fault. And by that, I mean I owe all my thanks to Kevin for giving me this idea. This morning I picked up my even newer Marlin 6. They gave me full credit for what I had paid for the Marlin 4, so I am not out a single penny more than if I had just bought the 6 in the...

    Any Mtn Bikers on RME?

This is happening locally, also. I've been dealing with Hangar 15, and they have stores throughout Utah and southern Salt Lake counties. Especially in the sub-$1000 bikes, their supply is extremely thin. Some of the bike plants overseas have been shut down, and they are also experiencing...

    Any Mtn Bikers on RME?

More background info: way back in 1994 when I bought that first Trek, it was from a friend who ran his own bike shop which carried four major brands. Rather than push me toward any specific brand or model, he instead had me ride similar bikes in each brand so I could decide which one felt best...

    Any Mtn Bikers on RME?

I appreciate everything you guys said. I haven't heard back from the store (at least I don't think I did... but I've had back-to-back customers all afternoon so I may have missed their call), so I haven't had to make my final decision yet. In case you couldn't tell, the only thing that really...

    Any Mtn Bikers on RME?

Okay. Decisions, decisions. This morning I spoke with my contact, and then with The Big Boss. He said trading up is a possibility; he wanted his guys to inspect the bike before he committed to any thing (or any figures), and I totally understand that. So I cleaned up the bike a bit, then...

    Any Mtn Bikers on RME?

Hmm, good question. I have no idea what their policy is, but it can't hurt to check. I'll look into it.

    Any Mtn Bikers on RME?

Dave and I (and his teenage son) got together for another bike ride today. We spent almost an hour on dirt, with only a short chunk of pavement which was between his house and our route. Nothing fancy; just getting in some seat time. Dave has decided he has ridden this borrowed bike enough to...

Announcing the RME on-air ham radio net

Well, even though we are in 'summer' season the virus concerns have kept our closing time to 8pm (at least for a while). If we want to try the net again, I may be able to be net control assuming we start around 8:30-9:00pm. Shall we go for Wednesday night again, like before?

    Any Mtn Bikers on RME?

Yes, my bike is a 3x7 setup. I have not yet actually counted the teeth, but I have no reason to believe the specs on the web site are incorrect. Assuming they are right, my front is 42/34/24 and the rear cassette is 14-28. I was definitely in 1-1 gear. The Fezzari only has one cog up front...

    Any Mtn Bikers on RME?

Now that I have a bike, I am determined to get over the saddle sore stage. This means I am making myself ride for at least 30 minutes each day. Speed is not important; I just want seat time so my body can adapt to the bike. Saturday after work, I spent 35 minutes just riding around the roads...

    Any Mtn Bikers on RME?

Full disclosure up front: I am not a mountain biker. History: way back in 1994, I bought my first "real" mountain bike, a shiny new entry-level Trek Mountain Track 820. It was chromoly steel and heavy as hell. It had no suspension. It was very basic. However, I knew it was worlds better...

Trip Report Socially Distancing along the Pony Express Trail

Your post could not have been more timely. I have never driven this section (or any other) of the PET, though I've wanted to do so for quite some time. And now it looks like next week I will have a golden opportunity. Using this thread plus a googled map of the trail, my friend Mike and I...
