    The Ham Radio Thread

This was covered on page 1, yes, but the FCC has granted us a few more frequencies since then. As a result, the chart has been updated. Here is the new one: The entry-level Technician license (T) lets you do almost everything in the right column; you are limited on 10 meters but the rest is...

    The Ham Radio Thread

So many hams start with an HT. Back on page 6 of this thread, I advised against buying an HT for your first radio. A mobile radio makes a better first radio for many reasons, so that's what I always recommend... though they do cost more than an HT. On top of that, I suggest buying a quality...

cutting the cord and dumping satellite / cable TV -- who here has done it, and how?

Yeah, I had to swipe one or two from the mechanics laundry service at work.

    The Ham Radio Thread

While I have an Amateur Extra license, I do nothing that cannot be done with a Technician license. Ever. A well-known local named Carl (WE7OMG) has had a contact with KA6LMS. You can even hear it in one of their YouTube videos they posted when they were making contacts during a break.

    No burrito for you!

It seems the restaurant's 'no semi trucks' sign was about as effective as the 'gun free zone' signs you see here and there.

Anyone here ever register a free car at the DMV?

As a follow up to my original question and this thread in general: My vehicle donor could not find the title, so last Friday he went to the DMV and applied for a duplicate. Once he gets it, he'll bring it to me as planned. I decided a little recon was in order, so today I stopped by the DMV...

cutting the cord and dumping satellite / cable TV -- who here has done it, and how?

For anyone considering building or buying an antenna, it might be helpful to know what signals are in your area... and, more importantly, which direction(s) they are from your home. Here is a web site I used in my research for that information...

cutting the cord and dumping satellite / cable TV -- who here has done it, and how?

Behold, my friends--the great experiment. I am in this less than $5; I only needed to purchase wood screws, washers and some heat shrink tubing. Home Depot gave me a piece of scrap 2x4 they were going to discard; my brother-in-law gave me a spare balun he had (which Amazon sells for $4), and I...

cutting the cord and dumping satellite / cable TV -- who here has done it, and how?

Hey, it's my old thread! I can update you all with my progress. As planned, I dropped DTV like a bad habit. I then built an antenna (cost me an entire $4) and plugged it in. That gave me about 50 different local channels, all free. Yes, there are some that I will never watch (like the Home...

EJS 2019 Trail Officials -- which trails are you working?

It's an interesting trail (and heart stopping for those who are uncomfortable with cliff edges) and Larry certainly makes it a good time. I had the pleasure of running it with him in 2018, and I ended up acting as an additional/substitute tail gunner for part of the trip.

My Daughter just got pulled over in my Jeep for tire coverage.

I would expect them to step up enforcement, actually. In the past, they could be lax "because the annual inspections will catch most stuff" but now that there is no inspection, it's entirely up to them. I don't think that was their specific intention, no... but that's pure speculation on my...

This sounds like excellent advice. Thank you.

OBD II code reader / app

I got to use my Kitbest reader again a couple nights ago on a friend's KJ. Works great. For the curious, here is a link: https://www.amazon.com/Kitbest-Bluetooth-Scanner-Adapter-Diagnostic/dp/B01BY2CK32/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1546877868&sr=8-4

My Daughter just got pulled over in my Jeep for tire coverage.

That is not even remotely correct. Running with no flaps and insufficient flares was just as illegal five years ago as it is today. If this is true, then good on them. It is part of their job, after all. If they want us to take the law seriously, they need to stop looking the other way...

Anyone here ever register a free car at the DMV?

I am in the process of receiving a free car which currently does not run, though I don't think that is relevant to my question. The title will be signed over to me this week. I plan to go into the DMV and have it re-titled in my name; as soon as I can get it running, I will then get it...

Ham Radio Operators! What radio / band do you use?

The CB should be a non-issue. My Uniden PRO 510XL is mounted the same way, and it has operated just fine that way for years. The 2980 should be okay there, also, provided you leave it some room between the top of the radio and the bottom of the sheet metal "roof" piece. Its cooling fins will...

OBD II code reader / app

I have a Kitbest bluetooth scanner for my Android ($11 on Amazon), and so far I've just been using Torque Light (the free version) with it. To date, it has always worked perfectly. For such a pittance, there is no reason not to have OBD2 scan capability (assuming you have at least one OBD2...

    The Ham Radio Thread

I am not, but I tried to run one. I bought a QYT KT-8900 dual bander back in June. I installed it in my Metro, and hooked it up to a high-quality Larsen NMO2/70B antenna (which cost as much as the radio itself). Out of the box, this cheap radio gave me nothing but problems. The output audio...

Anybody here use Pluto TV on a PS3?

Almost a year ago, I finally dumped DirecTV. To replace it, I built my own antenna (for $4). I also bought a rudimentary DVR for $30 along with a $50 external HDD for storage. Now I have no monthly television bill at all, which I like. It also means I have few options when I do want to watch...
