RUST!!!!! WOW! That stuff goes deep! Since the last post I had to get back to work so work on BlackSheep II mostly gets relegated to the weekends now. As you have seen, I've been dealing with this crossmember which had a lot of rust: I was struggling to get access to it so I could remove as...

    Tell me about your shop

This is key - lots of air drops and locate the compressor either in a different room, or a shop I worked in once simply built a closet in which to put the air compressor. while that takes up some floor space, not having to listen to the compressor cycle is a big deal. The air compressor drain...

General Tech replacement tie rod end boots

What are your thoughts on replacement tie rod end boots? I managed to pick up a complete drag link and tie rod (from the pitman arm all the way out to both knuckles) for $12 at my local pick and pull. This is out of a '95 Grand Cherokee which is a nice little upgrade to my TJ (for the tie rod...

Another thing i noticed yesterday as I was looking at the images I took of the control arms: The control arms, left to right: 2 rear upper, 2 front upper, 2 rear lower, 2 front lower. If you look at the measurements written on the front upper and rear lowers: The front upper control arm is...

This weekend is about cleaning up rust and painting areas as I get them ready. Following the installation of the spring perch relo kit, I spent some time cleaning up the exterior, top and bottom of the frame in that area of the rear axle. Three coats of primer followed by three coats of enamel...

I posted up on the MetalCloak owner's fB page and a number of responses indicated Fluid Film or 3m Cavity Wax. Pretty cool video on the 3m website.

    BlackSheep II

Big day today - some friends came over with their welders and we got the new upper rear spring perches assembled and welded in. As a reminder, this is about how it looked from the factory: Clearly some clean up to do before I paint but I'm stoked to have these welded in. The install...

Today I took my axles to Krawl Off-Road, one of the 'local' shops in Upstate SC. They came highly recommended by other members of my local club - South Carolina Jeep Addicts. I've not been particularly active in the club, but following this build I think I'll need to - just so I can justify...

OBD II code reader / app

so it looks like the version of bluetooth for the hardware is what keeps some of the adapters from connecting with the iphone or ipad via bluetooth. Looks like it has to be bluetooth 4.0 compatible to connect with the iphone. so, search carefully, there are some out there but are a little more...

OBD II code reader / app

so far I'm finding more that are bluetooth and Android compatible but less options for Bluetooth and Iphone compatible. It's not clear to me why the hardware would be shown to be incompatible with Iphone when I can get the same app (same name app - i.e. AutoDoctor or Torque).

OBD II code reader / app

Who has purchased and used an OBD II code reader such as the FIXD that connects through your smart phone? If not the FIXD device, which one have you used and do you find it to be a good purchase?

    BlackSheep II

Today I decided to play around with my axles to determine to what extent a rebuild is necessary. Going into it, I felt the rear diff would need a rebuild because what I thought was excessive backlash. Turns out that it's possible the backlash is close, but it's the pinion bearings that look to...

    BlackSheep II

Thanks guys, I thought the Rubicon came with 4.10s. and yes, I do have the 5 speed. If I was still in Utah and had plenty of opportunity to do some real rock crawling (and money was no object), I'd definitely go to 4.56 or 4.88. However, the amount of rock crawling this rig will actually see...

    BlackSheep II

HA! Been down that road already, hope to keep my sanity this time! Something that it seems I haven't mentioned yet - it looks like the backlash on the rear axle is pretty large. I haven't pulled the cover, but I think it's going to have to be rebuilt. Question is whether or not to re-gear...
