General Tech What did you work on Today?

Got home from work late yesterday and only had about an hour or so in the shop but was able to get the gears mocked up and test fit about 4 times so ready for final assembly. Spicer and Richmond used to engrave the pinion to center line dimension in their pinions but most oversees units these...

General Tech What did you work on Today?

I think you caught those wheel bearings just before they damaged the hub. Once they lock up enough to spin in the hub even a small amount the hub is finished. You may have just been able to put a little grease in that one and been just fine though.

    2 post lifts

Like Carl, I chose a 10k pound model so I could get a wider inside column width mainly, plus I work on some larger trucks such as 4-door Duramax and Cummins trucks and wanted the capacity. The interior width was a small amount but every bit helps. I also work on a lot of FWD cars so I waffled...

General Tech What did you work on Today?

More progress on the square body last night. Started by removing and replacing the rear outer bearings and seals. Then I proceeded to clean and thoroughly inspect all of the components for the ring and pinion installation as well as the new Eaton TrueTrac limited slip differential. I...

    New drill press!

Nice drill press Greg. I have a Jet that is nearly the same size with the larger table and love it over the smaller 12~ish or so inch table on my previous drill press. I like that yours is variable speed, I have the step pulley design on mine and although it isn't too bad to change speeds, I...

    Ratcheting Wrenches

I haven't experienced that at all from Snap-on and one of the reasons the majority of my tools are Snap-on, quality and warranty being the two biggest factors. I have had about 8-10 Snap-on dealers over my 33+ year career and I have never had one deny a warranty on something that I purchased...

General Tech What did you work on Today?

Last night I was able to get the rest of the GM 12-bolt rear axle disassembled and cleaned in preparation for reassembly. Had to drill a couple additional holes to the case spreader adapter plates that I fabricated a couple of months ago when I worked on that Ford F-150. Carrier assembly...

General Tech What did you work on Today?

I have a confession to make....... I broke my own cardinal rule when disassembling projects. :mad2: I will ALWAYS make a list of parts as I am tearing a project down so I know I have the parts when the project is going back together. I don't get nearly the shop time I want these days so I...

    Ratcheting Wrenches

I think those will serve you well. I can't speak to how well NAPA will warranty the Gearwrench stuff but the couple of items I have had issues with of OTC and Carlyle, my local NAPA has been great. Swapped them right out and if they didn't have it, they ordered the tool immediately. Granted...

    Ratcheting Wrenches

You are very welcome. The only two issues I have with my ratcheting wrenches that do not use a reversible lever is that they are perfectly flat, no angle at the end which can negate their use in very specific scenarios. Secondly, that you have to be careful where you use them as to not "wrench...

    Ratcheting Wrenches

I have several sets of ratcheting wrenches and it seems they each have a specific area they have their pros and cons in. I work on a wide variety of items so each time I purchased wrenches I ended up buying an SAE as well as a Metric set. The left side of my toolbox is SAE and the right side...

General Tech What did you work on Today?

And yes, JJ, the original project was about the wheels. Looks like scope creep got ahold of ya. :D Mike

General Tech What did you work on Today?

JJ, the decision to pull an axle, for me anyways, is complex and includes multiple factors. Yes, yours was an easy decision to make because it was getting new leaf springs but also because if you look at the factory holes where the case spreader is attached, one was located directly under the...

General Tech What did you work on Today?

I didn't get much done on the K10 last night as I got out of work late but I was able to get the axle stabbed under the truck after installing the new front leaf springs and hardware. When my son stopped by after work I had him help me lift the axle from the fixtures on my fabrication table to...

That's funny you mention that because now it's getting filled up with old parts. :D

General Tech What did you work on Today?

Finished up the front axle for the square body last night. I had to dig my selection of shims out as I couldn't get EXACTLY what I was shooting for knowing the first run was just a bit too deep of pinion and the second try was much too shallow. I was trying to find a shim stack to net me only...

General Tech What did you work on Today?

Last of last night's pictures. I wasn't pleased with the first markings. Pinion was a bit too shallow. On the coast side it is more evident that it is riding high up on the tooth near the face. Second setup was much, much closer but now ever so slightly deep. At least I think I know where...

General Tech What did you work on Today?

Continuing on.. Applying red Loctite to the ring gear bolts. Torqueing the ring gear bolts in place. Installing the original carrier shim stack under the set up bearings for initial test. Race set in place and ready to install in housing for first test fitment. Spreading the case...
