I'd probably want to take the inner shafts out as well... just so you don't bung anything up in the housing. I drove my grand around for almost a year with the outer stub shafts holding in the unit bearings, no inner shafts, and no front driveline. Whatever you do, put your outer stub shafts...

Thanks for the offer Zac. I was acting up last night when I drove it, and I noticed that the sound stays constant relative to vehicle speed, not RPM. I actually got it to shift from third back into second, and the sound remained constant until it shifted back into third and then went away...

So this started a few days ago. Every once in a while, mostly at the shift from second to third, occasionally at the shift form first to second my jeep will make bad noises. If the windows are rolled up, it will sounds like cross between an old school V belt squeek and a leaky straw that is...

I've seen it a few times locally. I might have even place sharpie residue on a hand dryer in a similar fashion...
