I would imagine its easier to break tracton and hold it there when your car has the combined tire contact area as a bicycle.

If you wanted to go with a better material you can get 4130 chromoly for basically the same price on onlinemetals.com, and you can order only exactly how much you need. Chromoly it quite a big stronger and yields much higher, so it's less likely to permanently bend. It's easily TIG welded too.

you might be able to find a usb to ide adapter to run one on a modern computer.

Does it have hi-frequency start? (will it try to fire in the air? or does it have to be touching the work)

I've got some of the durafix rod. I'd never use it as a substitute for tig welding. It's is good for brazing radiators and what not though... or if you accidentally poke a 1/2" hole in the bottom of your pop can... It seems like it would be good for fixing rivit holes on small aluminum boats...

The quality of the ground connection is pretty reliant on it's pressure into the work. Magnets don't offer much, and they're not really useful at all in many situations.
