    Your favorite/best car memories thread

On a different forum that I visit, somebody started a thread like this. The idea is for us to share some of our favorite car experiences from our lives. That forum doesn't get much traffic, so I thought I'd bring this up here (I hope it hasn't been done before). Besides, I'm curious about...

Its Official! EJS 2017 Paper is out.

It's official--I'm an official! They actually printed my name in there a few times. Guess there's no backing out now. :)

I apologize; I did not see your post until right now. The 146.760 frequency is a repeater output. It uses the standard .600 offset, and is negative (thus 146.160 input frequency). There is no tone required to activate this machine. Again, I'm sorry I was so late. I expect you could at...

I almost always monitor while I'm driving, since I have fixed mobile radios in both the Suburban and the Jeep. Because I live so close to home--and because I have odd work hours compared to most folks--this usually means I am listening for ~10 minutes here, ~10 minutes there at seemingly random...

I am happy to report Dave has now made his first radio contact. He was using his HT from inside his car--which means conditions were far from ideal--yet I was able to have a conversation with him while I was in my Jeep in the parking lot at work. Welcome aboard! Now, who's next? ;)

Because Roadkill, -or- I bought an old ugly domestic car

I spent some more time on the car yesterday. Up first, the hood. I had to take it back off so I could cut off a few of the support ribs on the underside, thus making clearance for my 14" drop base air cleaner. I didn't begin with a fully-charged battery, so it didn't surprise me when I...

When you try to contact each machine, do you ever hear a squelch tail when you un-key? If so, that would indicate that (a) the repeater is functioning and (b) your HT can reach it. Failing that, you'll have to give it a shot with your mobile radio. EDIT: I forgot to mention to be sure you...

Same here. If Steve tells me any of the three repeaters I listed above are functional, I will immediately try to make an IRLP connection with it/them to see how it goes. Assuming it succeeds, I'll even call out to him in the off chance he is monitoring at that time. I'd be on board for that...

Hmm, I do believe that is too far away for the Intertie. Perhaps I can use the 76 to connect to a repeater near you, and then we can have a QSO that way. Are there any repeaters near you with an IRLP node? (pause while I go Googling) Have you successfully used any of these machines...

Right. But since I was sitting in my Suburban in the parking lot at work, I had a much better radio on my end... so I had Kevin try the 146.620 Farnsworth machine instead. That worked well, and we were able to make Kevin's first official radio contact. :)

<pshaw> Dude, you have nothing to worry about. Sure, I may have listed a number of reasons why you wouldn't want to buy a Baofeng, but there are also numerous reasons why one makes sense. You made the right choice for you. I inquired only so that I would know what hardware you are using...

Remember: I was attempting to use it with my own HT while sitting on my living room couch. Had I been using the mobile radio in one of my vehicles, it would have been no problem. I chose the 448.400 machine on the Intermountain ridge. It's about equidistant for both of us, and you don't even...

Nope. I bet it would be great on his end, but not for me. I can reliably hit that machine while sitting here on the couch in my living room, but there is so much steam and static that I am almost not copyable. As a result, I had to select another repeater which is closer to me.

With Kevin B in mind, tonight I had two fellow hams help me experiment with a few repeaters in the SW corner of the Salt Lake valley. My goal was to find a repeater that (1) Kevin might be able to hit with his HT from his home in Magna, (2) that I can also hit with my HT from my home in Lehi...

Did you actually order a radio yet? If so, which model? This is a pretty common way for people to get licensed nowadays, so don't feel like you're the only one out there who "cheated" the system. Hardly. There is absolutely no shame in doing this. Once you have your license and you start...

Earlier today, this happened: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PuS2RhIzqd4 (Sorry for the shaky picture. The ambient temp at time of recording was only 25^, and I had already been outside for an hour and was shivering, making it difficult to hold my phone steady. This video is my second...
