'02 dodge 1500 front axle problems

I picked up an '02 dodge 1500 with the 5.9 and auto trans tonight, and the left front CV shaft was off the truck, and in the back seat. The guy said the snap ring or something failed, and so he had already got a new one and was including it with the truck. Well tonight, I was doing some work on the truck, and went the throw that CV shaft on, and spun the tire after it was all back together, and it will stop (not make a full rotation, maybe half?) so i think the front end is grenaded, Or atleast the ring and pinion and that is why the front shaft was out.

However, it also doesn't make sense, because the right side still spins? Anyway, since it was all back together, I drove it out of the garage to see if it was just really stiff, nothing seemed wrong while driving it, so I drove it around the block, and got it back, seemed fine. So I pulled it back into the garage to do the tie rod end, and the shaft had come out again.... Not a good way to start with a truck you just bought.... I am going to pull the cover and see if I see any problems tomorrow, but want to get the process of finding a replacement (worst case scenario) or a possible easy fix started.

Got the shaft just pushed back on the best I could (mostly to test the front end) put it in 4lo, and there is something wrong. Either ring and pinion, or spider gears are shot.

My next question is can you run these trucks without a CV shaft? I am worried if I do, the front end will come apart. I know I have heard if you do it on a unit bearing front end, they can separate. I can't tell however if this is a unit bearing or not.

It's a unit bearing front end. And usually if you run the unit bearing without a stub shaft in it, it will fall apart leaving you without a wheel.

Pull the diff cover and report back what you see ;)

no kidding I would be making heads roll......on the other hand i would NEVER buy a truck that is only half put together

Ya I called the guy, he said he didn't know (sure....) and said he would call his buddy on it. Haven't heard back from him, and Probably won't.

Ya I thought it was a unit bearing as well. Just had to make sure.

I took it to the tire shop to get work done that I can't do. Turns put the rack and pinion is bad, upper ball joints, and an exhaust leak. Buying used vehicles is like pulling teeth....

Ya I took the guys word for it that it was just the snap ring, and I shouldn't have... '02 dodge 1500 for sale?!?

I'm surprised you still went dodge when you realized you couldn't afford a diesel. I'll bet you got a good deal though. Good thing you didn't realize these problems while driving 75 on the freeway!

Well that is definitely reassuring. I thought the seller was being pretty honest with me, he told me the truck has 187k on it, and he replaced the dash, (says it has 106k) so I think with that, he was being honest about the front end.

Ya it drove really nice, feels like it has lots of power and it should tow the rig just fine.
