so I am looking at a 06 power stroke f250 that has the automatic and tow package... the truck has 60,000 miles on it but looks great...

I just need to know what problems I would be looking for in the near future... and if this is a good truck to get or should I pass it by?...

It has the 6 liter turbocharged engine... and is pretty much stock from what I can see...

Advise me....

The 6.0's have a poor head bolt design that is known to fail and spit out the gaskets I have seen several let loose on even stock engines. It is a very expensive fix, but head studs from ARP will solve the problem. EGR's, Turbo's are also known to fail expecially in the later years. Diesel Power did a big write up on the 6.0 and listed many common problems and solutions for the 03-07 models I would track that issue down.

I would also spend a great deal of time on the Powerstroke forums before I made a decision on buying one. I know people that have never had a problem with their 6.0, but I know more people that have spent a lot of money to get them right. As much as I want to like them I don't but thats just my .02 :-\

6 liters are notorious for being very leaky.... They've earned the nickname "Six Leakers" for good reasons.

Also, if you ever have head issues, the cab (yes, the entire CAB) has to come off to get the heads off. Even just to do a head gasket.

They have numerous EGR/EGR cooler issues, turbo issues, the afforementioned head issues, just to name a few.

I'd strongly suggest registering for and studying up on a diesel bulliten board before you decide. My new favorite diesel board is www.dieselbombers.com

It's free, and set up just like RME. Plus, the guys there are super helpful, and won't flame you for asking questions.

6.0= OH NO NO NO, I drive one for a company vehicle and we have about 20 of them, nothing but expensive problems from about 60,000 miles and on. Our new 6.4 powerstrokes are even worse, 2 out of the 5 are on new motors already!

 I remember seing a rod that had blown through the side of a 6.0 block at a shop owned by the company that my brother works for. It was on its 3rd set of heads and second engine at the time. It was cool to see how easy the cabs can be lifted, and the mechanics said they were getting pretty quick at doing it  They retired their fleet of 7.3's for the 6.0's when they came out because the 7.3's had too many miles. After that I would trust a 7.3 with 300K before I had any faith in the 6.0 :-\

If one put some time into reworking the head studs, eliminating the EGR, installing an aftermarket turbo, carry an extra computer and intalling decent fittings on all the fluid lines I think that the 6.0 could be a decent engine.

At my work there are 5 6.0 F550s. There is not one that has not had the turbo replaced and at least one (an 04) has had three. These trucks all cross the scales at over 15,000 but are not abused. My current truck is a dodge 5500 and has been trouble free even loaded to a total weight of 19,500. If I was looking for a personal tow rig I would avoid the Fords even though I would rather drive the Ford because they really are a better ride in every way except for engine reliability. A current Ford out of warrenty is something I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole. Sad!

My 6.0 is on its 3rd head gasket after only 109,000 miles. Fourth egr valve (I have since unhooked it) and it's second transmission. I would not buy another one.

Neighbor just got rid of their 6 liter. 5 trans's and 3 new motors. It is a work truck and they pull with them. I think I'll keep my 7.3 thank you.:D There is a reason Ford was suing Navastar. As much as I hate Dodges, I'd buy one before a 6 liter.

A local tire shop has a 6.0 in an F450 that had lots of problems. After the factory warrantee was up they swapped the 6.0 for a 24v Cummins. I cant emagine the amount of money they had wrapped up in that truck when it was all said and done though. There is a big "C" on the front fender, but other than that you'd never know.

My dream truck would be a F350 King Ranch with a CR Cummins

The Cummins is about the only good thing about the Dodges, IMO... :-\

I've been a big Dodge (Cummins) fan for years, but after my last Ram I'll be hard pressed to own another. I wish Toyota would bring the diesel Tundra this way.

I hear ya... I know a few that tell me that dodge trannys are the weak link... so if I was to get a dodge cummins what tranny would you all suggest? I personally love 5 speeds... but an auto is just as nice...

The Dodge autos are marginal at best, and that's without towing heavy loads or turning up the engine. I've had 3 Dodge Ram diesels and they have all been manuals... I wouldn't want to chance spending the $$$ on rebuilding an auto. I didn't mind shifting, neither did the wife... 2 trucks had the 5 speed, last one had a 6 speed. Obviously the manual gets better mileage than the auto, high teens to low 20's MPG was normal.
