'06 Tacoma V6, timing chain?

So, my buddy has an '06 Tacoma and he asked me to help him install a new timing belt and water pump on it. Apparently, the dealer told him that these motors need this done at around 100,000 miles as preventative maintenance. His has 120K on it. I'm not a Toyota guy, but I've heard something like that too. And last time my 4.7 V8 daily driver was at the dealer they said it was past due for the same thing. His dealer (Karl Malone Toyota) wants like $900 to do it, which he doesn't have, so I'm more than happy to do it for him.

Okay, all fine and good.

Except... I just started looking for parts online to order in to do this job and it looks to me like the '06 actually has a chain, not a belt. I see kits for earlier models that include the water pump, timing belt etc. that are obviously what the dealer is talking about, but nothing like that for the '06.

So... Is my buddy just being filled full a hooey by the dealer? From ten minutes online, it looks to me like his truck doesn't even have a timing belt.

And I'm thinking a chain doesn't need the 100K replacement at all as a maintenance item and he should just save his money and my labor.

Know me up Toyota guys!

That never happens. The dealer is always right, especially Menlove. ;)

The 4.0 has a timing chain and it does not need to be replaced at 100k. Full load of hooey. The 3.4L found on the '95-04s does have a timing belt and we usually change them at 90k-120k. Someone must have gotten confused.

If it is in fact an 06 it does have a timing chain. And shouldn't need to be changed unless there is an issue with it. The only reason I could think of would be cause the timing cover is leaking (common issue with the 4.0) but that doesn't mean the chain needs to be done at the same time...

Awesome!

Save him some money. And I wasn't looking forward to spending a day working in my garage in this heat. Indeed, both Jeeps need ball joints and the Honda has a clogged pilot jet that is making it run rough but I'm putting it all off until cooler weather.
