I swapped front and rear, they are different width, different lug pattern, and NONE of the jk brackets on the rear will work with anyting designed for a ZJ.

Mine was a 5.9.
The 8.8 is a more common swap, and as I recall, it's narrower, so wheel adapters will bring it out to the width of the stock front.

the ring gear is bigger. iirc, 44's are 8.25 inches, and well, 8.8's are 8.8 inches. and the shafts are a little bigger as well 30 spline vs 31 spline. you can get them with disc brakes. and they can be had for almost nothing, however, you will have the added cost of setting it up for your jeep. so keep that in mind. the biggest drawback to an 8.8 is the fact it uses c clip axles. which really isn't a problem until you break an axle, and if that is an issue, you can get a super 8.8 which will eliminate the c clips and in turn widen it around an inch per side, i think. it maybe a little less, or an inch total. i don't remember exactly.

Grandrumble, they may eat you alive for not googling basic and simple questions, but check out mallcrawlin.com for your ZJ-specific questions.
