So the neighbor comes over today and asks me to take a look under his Dakota. He said he thought his transfer case was going out. I asked him how he figured that and he said it was because it won't go into reverse. He said that forward was fine and only reverse.
I told him that the transfer case had nothing to do with going in reverse and that it was probably his transmission. I asked him to start it up and show me and he said it hasn't done it for a few weeks. I climb under and take a look and there is a lot of fluid driping from under it but it looks like it is coming from two places. Those places are the end of the transmission where it bolts up to the transfer case and where the slip yoke goes into the transfer case. (5.2 Liter V8 with 4 speed automatic transmission) The oil was mostly red which tells me it is most likely transmission fluid.
I asked him why its not slipping now and he said he didn't know why. After about 30 minutes of talking he told be that he did put transmission fluid in it because it was not showing on the dip stick. Once he put a quart in it, it started working again. The truck has about 100K miles on it so I really didn't think the transmission was slipping. I am not a transmission guy, hell, I'm not even a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination but he said he figured because I had a couple of Jeeps I knew what I was doing.
Based on what I see, I think that if the transmission was sealed up he should be fine. I think it was because of his fluid level that it was not going in reverse. My posting here is for two reasons, first, do you think my assumption is correct about the fluid level and second, what would it take to seal the end of the transmission back up. I know what it will take to seal the transfer case back up and thought that it ought to be done since it will be out of the truck anyway.
Is there a seal on the shaft at the end of the transmission before it goes into the transfer case and can it be changed without removing the transmission from the truck? Can you get to it if the transfer case is removed?
