Candace's 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee is up to something...

#1
It takes a few seconds (5 secs.) of cranking before it will start, I can hear the fuel pump power up... It is kind've hit and miss, sometimes it will fire right up...

#2
The check engine light is on... I have plugged it into the scanner and it gets "No Codes", and if you try and erase them it gives "No codes to erase"

Any ideas? Anyone know how to reset the computer on a WJ? Unplug the battery for a few minutes?

Thanks for the help...

Unplugging the battery should reset the computer. That's about all I have to add... :-\

I'll see if that deletes the check engine light...

Anyone know where the fuel filter is on this beast? (00' WJ w/V8/auto)

I've not had a WJ, but my YJ, XJ, and ZJ they're all pretty close to the fuel tank on the 'frame'.

it should be tucked up forward of the tank--that is if it's anything like a ZJ.

possibly a bad injector or something?

jeep motors tend to be more sensative to spark gap. A basic tune up wouldn't be a bad Idea, where we're talking hard start. If you don't know where the fuel filter is, it is probabbly time to replace it, but a fuel filter rarely affects starting, it tends to be more visable on a high demand condition.

I had the same starting problem on my '96 ZJ, as well as on my mommas '97....The dealer said it was supposed to do that... Some safety thing, the cranking is supposeed to let the oil get to the top end of the motor before it starts....
It sounded good to me, so I left it at that....But who knows.

I doubt that to be true. Mine fires up in about half a second every time, even on the coldest winter days.

Agreed, her crank time is growing... it used to fire right up (including use of the remote start.

Looks like a basic tune up is in order... :p

Not sure if it is true on this pump, but I remember on the older XJ's, reading something about a anti-bleed-oof valve in the fuel pump that goes bad. Basically it is there to hold pressure in the line so it is ready to fire next time you hop in. When it goes bad, the pump has to build up the fuel pressure until it is great enough to run....I know Ang's XJ was that way almost the whole time we had it....Doesn't seem to mean the pump is bad, just the valve in it....
But I would do the filter first too.

From experience I can tell you that it is the seal on top of the tank where the pump is mounted - OR - the gas cap is leaky & not allowing the tank to pressurize.

I messed around with mine for days until I found that mine was the o-ring seal at the tank. Dropped the tank, took pump out, replaced seal, good as new :D
