I know quite a few people on here have 3rd Gen Dodges with the cummins I have loved mine but after pulling a 28 foot enclosed trailer with a buggy and 4 4-wheelers this last weekend I want some more power not alot but it felt a little sluggish with that much weight behind it it is 100% stock right now....

My question is what programmers are you guys running and how do you like them. Im not going for the most horsepower just a litle more ooomph and possibly some more MPGs

I've never gotten actual mileage gains from either programmer I've had. The overhead MPG computer will tell me all kinds of cool things, though. Had an Edge with Attitude on my '99 PowerStroke and have an Edge EZ on my '04 Dodge.

I seem to get the same mileage with/without the chip. It's a lot more fun to drive with the chip, though. I do have to watch the EGTs on the Dodge with the chip, though. I'd imagine that's why the factory programming is there?

The reason your mileage doesn't change is because your foot is on the floor more often with a chip. I have run both Edge and SuperChips on trucks. The SuperChip seemed to smoke more than the Edge. The Edge gave me more information which was nice, it also gave me top speed which was helpful when my kids drove my truck because I could tell how they were driving. I did actually track a few tanks through my truck with the chip without a load and with a load. I did manage to get about a 2 mpg difference without a load and actually got worse with a load because I pushed it harder a little harder to maintain speeds. Not much of a difference but if I towed flat I bet it would be just a smidgen better, maybe 1 or 2 mpgs.

With any chip, don't forget to open the exhaust up, if you run a modified program your exhaust temps will increase under load and you don't want to burn down a turbo.

I ran a Edge in my F150 Super Crew as well, I liked it in that truck too. I did put a cold air and exhaust on it. The last two mods probably made more of a difference on performance than the chip. With any gas motor, its not going to have the power differnce the diesel has but it was a bit noticeable.

Okay, first things first here. Before you start looking at any programmers you need to first look at the motor and make sure it is running well. Injectors, air filter, fuel filter, even tire pressures and sizes. If you are running an over sized tire that will make a difference in how your truck feels while pulling. Maybe even a gear change would net you the performance you are looking for. Next, you need to take a look at getting the air in and out of your truck. You don't want to be throwing more fuel at the motor without more air. First, take a look at a quality cold air intake and an exhaust. You said you have a third gen but what year? Yep, it will make a difference. In 2005 Dodge put a 4" exhaust up to the cat, after the cat it was a 3.5". In 2003 through 2004.5 it was just a 3.5" system. You will want a 4" system and I would recommend a T-304 stainless for the Utah winters. Intake is a little easier. Look into a system from S&B, Banks, or AFE. For the best air flow I would recommend the S&B or the Banks with the scoop. After you have addressed all the air flow then you are ready for more fuel. For the third gen of any year I would highly recommend the Smarty Jr. from Mads Electronics. That programmer is set up for safe fueling while towing and working the motor.

I am very familiar with Diesel performance and the need to add more air as we add fuel. The exhaust and intake are gonna be the first mods but i thought that was a given in any situation so i didnt bother to state that I am not gonna re gear the truck as it already has 4.10s the truck runs in tip top shape i just want more power i am running a leveling kit with 305-55-20 tires on it wich is not that much bigger than stock before this truck i was driving a 12 second 2001 CTD Im just not familiar with what chips these HPCR motors really like and what chips seem to cause alot of problems

The PowerStroke I'd say that would be fair (although I did drive a few hand-calc'd tanks through it while driving with an egg under the pedal). The Dodge, not so much. I don't quite drive the Dodge with an egg under the pedal, but I really don't drive it like I'm 18 either.

My personal position is that the chips DON'T give better mileage (this opinion is mine: it is only based on FACTS re: my vehicles and the way I drive. I DID ONLY use an EDGE chip in the Ford and have ONLY used an Edge chip on the Dodge. Your mileage, driving experience, opinion may vary and mine is what it is.) They are worth some power, but if you're trying to get better mileage, I'd go with a freer flowing exhaust/intake before I'd go to the chip. I think that's money better spent.

i have an 05 cummins with an afe stage 2 intake 4" magnaflow exhaust (no cat) and the new smarty programmer and i tow my rig to moab as fast as i want to go without heating up and i get 20 mpg with 37" tires. chips do help mpg

06 Dodge dually, auto, Edge Juice w Att., MBRP muffler, full 4", modified airbox with AFE filter and AFE Bladerunner airhorn. pull a 38` 5er or a 18 carhauler with Jeep n ATV loaded. Just dont drive it like ya stole it and all will be ok..watch the EGT`s.
