22re Block rebuild

Question......

I am rebuilding a 22re block. The block runs; however, I would like to do rings, honing, and polish the crank. If the compression is OK (don't have any numbers, so lets assume worst case scenario), is there anything else I should have the machine shop do? Cylinder head is brand new BTW.

I would also like to know if any members have some good/bad experiences with local machine shops, and if you recommend any that may have a slightly better knowledge on Toyota engines. I am going to be keeping/driving this 4runner for many years, and would love to have a long-lasting engine.

Thank you very much for any two cents you can throw in.

You are on the right track. I would do the same thing on a good block.

Mine needed to be bored. It was my first time rebuilding an engine and it;s still running after 30K or so. Must have done something right.

From what I understand, the Head you have is fully assembled, correct? If not, it would be cool to mill the head and get a little more compression. If you have the money, a cam built for lowend would be cool too.

I took my Supra head to Strausburg Maching in Lindon. They totally hooked me up on the work and the head gasket kit. I've had a couple motors done by them, the first of which is 8 yrs old and still running strong.

Yes. The head is brand new (let me explain). The head was trashed in it's past life, so it was decked (higher compression). It has a 3 angle valve job, new springs, keepers, blah, blah, blah. I haven't had the best of luck with blocks, so a reputable shop would be great.

Sounds like this is probably the place to take a block to. 8 years  .... That's pretty damn good!

Pro Machine

A few of us at Wild Yoats have recently used PRO MACHINE in SLC and David Yates has done a absolutely killer job on them (22re's). My engine is, do I dare to say, almost FAST!

Pro Machine has recently started to advertise on Wild Yoats. He shop is simply amazing (outstanding equipment) and better yet his prices are great. He also supplies a lot of the dealers around here with rebuilt Toyota engines.

I am in the process of doing a tech/shop article on them since I am so impressed with their work. I have run into may people around as well that have nothing but good to say about them.

For the best part, he has extended us a special price of $575 for a rebuilt Toyota 22R-E shortblock (with a core). Darn good deal.

Info:

PRO MACHINE

Quality 22R(E) rebuilds and engine parts at killer prices!

Mention Wild Yoats for SPECIAL PRICING!

I used "Crankshaft grinding company"(sp?) anyway, they do more than just crank grinding. Have them change your cam bearings and hot tank the block.

does a short block usually include a new timing chain? What about head gasket?
I heard you can just pull the intake with all the wiring, so then you avoid the scary part of 22re. How hard is it to clean/ change injectors while you were there to? Whats the cost of this? Anyone recomend a shop and or rough price on pulling and installation?

YIKES! I am sorry to report that this was the company that did my head two years ago. Major problems! I am also sad to report that I did recommend them after they did mine (back then), turns out they did a really poor job on it and this is why I had it redone again elsewhere .... (just my own experience though)....
