Ok, so I recently purchased an 85 4runner. Increadibly enough, it began to hiss from the engine just a day after I bought it. Discovered a small leak from the outside portion of the headgasket (driver's side). Upon dismantling the head, it was discovered that the pistons were more floppy than you know what inside the cylinder walls. In light of the crappy motor, it was swapped with an 88 motor (22re), as well as 88 wiring harness, and 88 EFI components. After spending $150 in small Toyota accessories (plugs, plug wire set, cap rotor, thermostat, etc.), and verifying that there is fuel, and spark, the sucker will not start.
So far, this has been done:
Discovered the 85 computer has different calibrations and fuel maps than 88, even though they plug in just fine. Swapped the 85, still won't start.
All grounds are secured (including the one under the intake plenum).
I just looked on Napaonline.com, and found that the rotor I bought for the original 85 is slightly different than the 88 (would this cause it not to start??).
After disconnecting the coil on my buddies 87 to compare how fast his cranks compared to mine, I am noticeably cranking slower. Could this be due to a weak battery, and would this be the culprit?
Finally, I am wondering if possible low compression (please god no...) in the 88 block is the reason.
In any event, any suggestions or perhaps similar experiences would be delightfully accepted. I'm at the end of my rope here.
