22RE timing

Working on a new-to-me motor. I can't get the timing any closer than 15 deg or so, and it's running like crap when it runs at all. Working from the FSM, I've set the motor to -5btdc on the compression stroke (and verified the rockers were loose on cylinder one). I've checked the index hole on the cam, and it syncs with the timing mark on the crank pulley. I'm stabbing the dist with the rotor at 12:00,and it seems to rotate back just like it should, but the reluctor won't line up on the pickup coil. This pic is of the dist rotated as far counterclockwise as it will go, and you can see that the reluctor is still a couple degrees off the center of the pickup.

I thought at first that the timing chain was off a tooth or two, but that would cause the cam and the crank to be out of sync (and it doesn't look like they are), and it wouldn't cause this, would it? Even with no chain at all, I should still be able to stab the dist on the cam gear and have it line up right. Has anyone seen this before or know what's causing it?

Hmm not sure on this one. Twice now I've seen similar issues and it ended up being off one tooth on the timing chain. Align the 0 on the indicator tab to the groove in the crank pulley and then verify that the dot on the cam sprocket is pointed straight up. It's important to make sure the drive side of the chain is tight (opposite of the plunger side). If not it 'could' be off a tooth and go unnoticed.

Likely not your issue but its not uncommon for that little spring loaded contact inside the distributer cap go missing. The one in the center that touches the rotor.. They will still run without it but not very well.

Good luck

plugs, wires, rotor, tps, ignition coil... Just sayin... I had more problems with ignitors than anything else with 22re's. Have you checked the flash codes on the soft check engine light?

I did check that, yeah. No codes.

is it 180 degrees off?

No, unless something is lying to me.

The index hole on the cam gear and the timing mark on the crank are lined up when I'm at TDC on the compression stroke. Everything except for the guts of the distributor itself is telling me the timing is correct.

I wonder what would happen if I stabbed the dist at 1:00 instead of 12:00...

TPS was out of adjustment. I ohmed it before I put it on the new motor, and then I forgot to dial it in. The ECU won't cut timing advance when you jump the test port unless it likes what it sees from the TPS I guess.

You are welcome... I knew if I told you to check everything that makes a 22re run right you would find the problem.
