Im looking to replace the 249 tc in my zj with a 242. Ive been reading some stuff online and am wondering if someone can shed some light on a question. Everything online says find one around the same year as your vehicle? the 242 I'm looking at ins a 89 and my zj is a 98. If I swap the input shaft and sun gears to the 242 will I be okay?

where were you 2 months ago i would have traded you 242's LOL i put a 99 242 in my 94 ZJ.

to answer your question tho, i don't think so. what i ended up having to do was use the front half of the 249 w/ the input and planetary gear. and the back half of the 242 with all the 242 internals to get mine to work.

so half is 249 and half is 242? A little more specific for my jeep being a 98 I need to find a tc that is 95 or newer. supposedly the planetary gears are cut differently on pre 95? as well as the speedo won't fit if its pre 95

There are 3 things to look at when doing that swap: spline count, input shaft length and gear cut angle.
The spline count and input shaft length are easily cured by an input shaft swap. But the third makes a swap more difficult. In 94 there was a change in the angle of the cut of the gears. So your two tcases won't swap input shafts.
Here's a great writeup about input shaft compatibility and what you need to look for:

But IMHO keep looking for a 242 out of a 95 or newer Jeep. And if possible get one out of a zj that's what I did and I managed to find one with the same length input shaft and so I didn't have to do anything to my new tcase before dropping it in.

yes you would use the front half of your existing 249 and mate it with the back half and internals of the 242. i did however forget to ask 4.0/ 5.2/5.9 tho?
