350 Chev motor into Diesel Mercedes

I am helping my brother put a 350 Chev motor in his old Mercedes that has a blown diesel motor in it. He has the 350 motor in it but that is about it. What else am I going to need to do besides driveline and radiator? What would make this swap the hardest?

Does anyone know of a shop that will do this kind of work in the Logan, Brigham, Ogden area?

Don't you need to worry about things such as fuel tank, fuel pump and emissions equipment? How about things like alternator, engine mounts, I am sure the list goes on and on. Have you priced out what it would cost to have the diesel engine rebuilt? Just because you have a 350 lying around does not make a swap like that cheap by any means.

We have the motor in right now so that is taken care of (motor mounts). We need a smaller oil pan with remote oil reservoir. That is going to be the hardest part to come up with or to fab. The pan is too low in the front so we need to take the pump and reservoir out and make it a remote location. Anyone know if this is possible?

For a small Chev, yes, almost anything is possible. Check out Milodon

Would you put it in your car? Is it in good shape? I worry about motors that have been sitting for a while. We drove the donor truck to the place we did the swap so we know it runs. I would rather be safe than sorry. Thanks for the info! I will run it past my brother if it is in good shape and see if he wants to undo all of what we have done so far.

I think he wants to sell it, he is getting sick of it but I want to give it a good shot before he gets rid of it.

I have no idea what shape it is in....been sitting there since before we moved in....It looks clean, still has an auto tranny hooked to it.

If someone could help me look into this it would be greatly appreciated.

I'd start with Milodon or Moroso and go from there. You might need to call them or something as I doubt anyone on the board has done this exact swap.

Maybe not the same swap but maybe needed a lower profile oil pan. I would just appreciate it if anyone happened to stumble onto a source it would be great. I will call the two you suggested and see if they can help me out. Thanks!!

Small blocks into Chevy II's are famous for needing a different pan. Either of those companies will have that pan, but I'm not sure what your clearance needs are. They can custom make whatever you need, though.

If i remember right. Chev small blocks came both front sump and rear sump. Depends what car/truck it came in. I've done swaps before and they can turn into a can of worms. I'm not sure if the end product would be worth the work in your case. And when he's done he won't be able to give it away. Trust me , been there , done that.

This has a front sump.. the problem is (I just looked at it for the first time since the swap) the steering bar going between the steering arms is really close to the motor. The mechanic is worried that under motor torque that it will hit the steering bar. The pan is what is soo close to the steering, I was thinking "what if" the sump part of it was a little farther back maybe an inch or so. Looks like everything else is going to work out.. this is my biggest dillema. He has the Chevy II pan on it now.

Any advice?

Move the motor back if possible. Bfh to make room at the firewall. Raise the motor up if possible. I've cut and welded a pan before. Leaked like hell. Finally had it galvanized to seal it. I suck at welding.

Guess it is back to square one... I need to pull the motor to get the oil pan out. In order to pull the motor I need to take the transmission crossmember out, pull the motor mounts, lift engine, drop transmission, take off the tranny bellhousing bolts, separate the tranny/engine, then I can pull the oil pan off. There isn't as much room as I thought there was. I guess when they installed it they installed both motor and trans together.

Good news is once I get the oil pan cut and welded back together there's no stopping the project. That was the most concern that shops have had when I took it to them to get it finished. I would rather not do the work myself but no shop will do it (liability issue).

Tons of work to be done and no warm place to do it :-\ , oh well. I will post pics when I am done.
