IMO, its too much work...unless you know a lot about them...a SBC with TBI or TPI is a very cost effect way to get some good power...

Any Good? I Want More Power Than My Straight Six And I Want To Know If It Packs Punch.

Which I-6 do you have? The Jeep I6? F/2F ? 292 I-6? 300 I-6?

Depending on which one you have, you can really pep up an I6 for MUCH less than paying someone else to isntall a V8...

its a jeep 258 4.2 its carb'd

There is alot you can do to that motor to warm it up a bit, make some more HP, Torque, etc.
First thing I would do is check out what Clifford has. http://www.cliffordperformance.com
Probably go with a more free flowing intake and exhaust (they have intake manifolds to swap in a 4 barrel carb) also go with a header.

Next step would be to swap in an RV cam or a horsepower cam. In my Cruiser I run a cam with a 273 degree duration. Gives me more horsepower, and more torque. Moves the power band into a useable area, without sacrificing low end torque.

After that, I'd look at shaving the head and installing some oversized SS valves.
After that, it's a choice of swapping the motor, or building a Stroker. I think you can do all of the above things for far less money than what you would have to pay someone else to swap in, adapt, and wire the Northstar V8 you mentioned.

If you can do most of the work yourself, and/or have buddies that can help you who know what they are doing, you can do a V8 swap pretty inexpensively, but at that point, I would consider a TBI 350 with an SM4xx and a Dana 300 T-case.

I dont know if you have looked into rebuilding a 4.2 but its not cost efective... Its over a grand. If your going to do all that work i.e. shaved heads, new cam, fuel inject(costs 1,200 alone), headders, ect. You really should rubuild the engine at the same time.....
You can build these moters just as easey as any chevy or ford but if it goes kablam they are alot more to rebuild... Just that thought for yah....
I still run the 4.2 in mine. I fuel injected it, got the free flow intake, hedders, exhaust and still am not impressed with the performance. In my opnion(Not everyone will agree) Its not worth building. In the long run you will get more bang for the buck going another route.
