If you were to pick the best parts of a 4x4 club that you belong to or would like to belong to, what would they be? What would you like to see more clubs do? General input is okay too....

clubs

i would have to say the group events like wheeling together or bbq's. and having a group to go to ask ?'s and something to belong too. i also like how people will generally help with problems or give you tips and ideas.

consistancy is allways nice too......

our club deos at least a wheelin trip every month witch is cool and what a 4x4 club is suposed to do. the thing that i wish we could do is more nonwheelin activities. also it would be cool to get other club members more involved in helping each other out.

Wheelin activities atleast twice a month, working on rigs together, and activities that don't relate to wheelin like bbq's and just hangin out :)

Might be a good idea to do Land Use services once a month or something too.

how about something like each member has to be the host of a BBQ type activity at their home or nearby park that is held twice a month, as their name comes through a rotation in the member pool of names

and the host of the barbeque will let the other people from the club help him finish his project at the time so it get's done quicker. :D

I second the more trial runs idea and not just to Moab all the time, local places that are awesome then Moab 1-2 times per year for the ones that are always broke. :D Competitions would be fun so we could test our rigs and driver ability and watch people wheel and see how thier rig is setup. The winner could produce some type of tech for the ones with not as wild of a setup or whatnot so we can all learn in the process. BTW, I have a club I am trying to setup.. the website will be available soon :).

A few thoughts...

Assign all of your members tasks... If they take ownership in a project (such as a particular trailride or BBQ) then they will have alot more desire to belong to the club.

Elect officers, even if it is a couple simple ones such as President, VP, Secretary, etc. They could each have a simple list of duties such as following up with those planning events to make sure they are on task. The VP could handle new members, etc. The secretary can make sure you have a current roster, and that all of your members get the invite, etc.

Make it fun & keep it fun. Don't plan more activities than the majority of your club can attend. A good mix seems to be one "official" club trailride a month and one "official" club social event a month. You can do as many as you want, but put a little less emphasis on the others so you don't get stressed about all the upcoming "events", etc.

Newsletter, be it by mail or email. Keep all the members of you club in the loop. The most sucsessful clubs (IMHO) have a regular forum, email list, etc in addition to a mailed/emailed newsletter once a month. Memer Bios, trail reports, etc. Assign one person to be in charge of the newsletter, but assign all you members different things to submit (such as a new member could do a bio, and a trail leader for the last run can do a trail report).

Keep is fun... :D

Those are two GREAT IDEAS! Maybe even have some small trophies or gift certificates from the club fund. I too am starting a club, but we both know a lot of the people in the same circle.........:(

It's great to wheel with good people huh! :D

The one I am starting is mostly for the people who just want to go out and wheel. It's not going to be a club "for members only" kind of thing. Just whoever wants to get on the email list and go wheeling are welcome to join. I have been wanting to join a local club for a while though. Let me know when your club is ready.

I too have been wanting to join a club for a while, I really like what RedRock has going on, but I heard its hard to get in with them as a member. I want a mixed between old-school and new-school ways, a NewOld-School. I like the way that sounds! Sounds like we'll both get what we want and make everyone happy. I like your idea too!

We're an unofficial club for unofficial members and are always looking for folks who like to wheel as opposed to just talking about it. We wheel mostly locally, in Moab, Colorado, and every labor Day we go somewhere different. This year it's Kanab. We have no officers (been there and done it - just didn't work), we simply have a select few of folks (about 5) that always seem to end up wheeling together when a post is made on our forum. Sometimes we have more than one run a month, sometimes we go two months, some folks only come out once a year for the snow run. We don't intentually keep it small but maybe that is a good thing. Nothing sucks more than running into a club run on a trail that has 20 + vehicles and they don't have enough common courtesy to let the smaller group or maybe more capable group pass them by. It just happened to our group in Colorado.
The problem with a lot of clubs is everyone has different tastes and different capabilities. Our club as an example has newby drivers, a select few extremely good drivers, Isuzu's that have bitchn solid axle conversions and those that are nearly stock. We normally wheel to the weakest link and the weakest link could be different each run.
Although we are primarily Isuzu's we do have a few other makes and models that show up intermittingly. We only truely have a few select rules; No alcohol while on the trail, help your fellow wheeler out (never leave a man on the battle field), and simpy have fun. http://www.zutah.com

Don't get hung up on the menial things. Lets just get it all together, set a date for the first meeting, and go from there. I'll even try my hand at burnin some meat if everybody pitches in! I've been known to flambe a few pieces of cow in my day! :D

I think one of the coolest things clubs can do is have projects to clean up and maintain trails. It isn't as fun as straight up wheeling, but it is way important and worth it. Keeps trails open, gets you out onto the trail, gives you some fun work to do, and gives the anti-wheeling enviros a reason to shut up.

Informal "clubs" are great if you just want to get a group together for some wheelin or a BBQ. We have an email list of people here in Moab just for that reason. There are over 30 names on the list, and we have runs 2-4 times a month. Usually, between 6-12 rigs show up on any given run.

A "real club", however, is much more than just an informal wheelin' group. A real club should consist of members who truely want to contribute to the clubs "cause" in some way. Different clubs have different reasons for existing, but I feel that a club should promote responsible 4-wheeling, work with the BLM or other land agency on trail work and access issues, and of course have fun! At least some structure is necessary (i.e. officers, bylaws, etc) if the club is going to do anything beyond just social get-togethers. Some of the things our club is doing include Adopt-A-Highway, trail clean-ups and maintenance, a booth at the local fair, Utah Trail Patrol, and a planned benefit run for the local humane society. And make sure you publisize what you do... let everyone know what great citizens we are!

And be sure to join U4WDA, USA-ALL, etc.

Jeff
