700r4 vs TH400, need help deciding....

Here's the deal. The Scout has a 350/TH400 missing the tcase, (I junked the original because I had bought 2 from MBryson and did the NP208 slip yoke conversion) problem is, the Th400 is a 32 spline and I didn't even count the splines on the one I got from Marc, long story short, as I went to bolt up the tcase Sunday, it is a 27 spline input.

My dilemma is,

do I keep the TH400 and try to find another tcase, will be stronger, but no overdrive

or

keep my 27 spline tcase and find a 700r4 to swap in, not quite as strong, but running stock hp. And I will get the overdrive.

I know I will need to figure out the TV cable, but I am already in the middle of building new crossmembers and setting up the drivetrain, so now is the time, if it's worth it.

Anyone have any experience with the swap to give any pointers?

Anyone have a 32 spline tcase or 700r4 they want to sell cheap?

the 700 has a lower 1st gear (3.06), compared to the 400 (2.48). But the 400 is stronger.
I've burned-up a couple in some extreme-duty at the drag-strip, but I would think that unless you're very hi-performance-modified, the 700 should take it the abuse of the trail pretty well. And it'd be nice to have the OD as well.

Just my $.02

depends on your diff gears,if they are too low 7r4, too high 7r4, just right t400..
also depends on the 700r4, earlier years (junk) without upgrades, later years good.
Ive ran two of them in crawlers and liked them.

As mentioned, I personally would run the r4. It's kind hard to argue with a lower first and an overdrive. Maybe use your budget to tell you which one to get.

I"ve got cases of all kinds. Get in touch, fool. The 700r4 is slightly more finicky to set up, and costs a LOT more to rebuild, but it's a decent trans. Think TH350 w/OD.

I might have a 32spl 241 still...

TV cable is important to set up right. If you get a 350 tbi it should already have the lever and bracket for it.

700R4 all the way. I know someone who can build them to hold up behind a big block on the drag strip. My son has one of his in a 3900 lb ElCamino running high 11's on slicks. PM me if you want his contact information.

problem solved, found a buddy with a 700r4 that works, for cheap, and found a buyer for my TH400...things are starting to come together.

400 heavy and sucks 45-ish hp to turn, the r4 is alot lighter and less parasitic drag along with the od. I do believe the r4 is longer over all by a few inches tho

Make sure you adjust your TV cable correctly, or you'll be shopping for another 700r very soon. By my understanding, it controls the hydraulic pressures inside the trans, and I have seen firsthand just how little distance traveled it takes to completely burn up a built tranny when the TV cable is maladjusted.

I have factory documentation if you need it, Bear... should be in the Haynes manual too, but there is a diagram spec'ing out the travel and angles of the bracket and lever.
