So my son's xj finally got to my garage so that we could put new shocks, that he got for xmas, on and guess what everything was all rusted so I went thru a can of pb blaster and let it soak for a day...
Well we got the fronts off ok and only had to drill out two bolts and install some bigger bolts and nuts... but when we got to the rear shock mounts it was another story...
First off we got the top bolts off ok and they had a bit of rust but we cleaned them up ok.... next I take the old 3/8 inch ratchet out and give the 18mm nut a good jerk and SNAP I broke the stud right off... the threads just snapped off at the base of the stud. I'm thinking this can't be good.... so I spray some more pb blaster on the other side and let it sit for a few hours.
We go back out and take the blow torch to the remaining stud and heat it up some and another blast of pb... take the ratchet out and with a light push.... SNAP.... once again not good....
So the son takes the jeep back home and I start thinking about how to fix this problem... So I make a trip to teraflex the next morning to see Carl and see what he would suggest and it seem he was thinking the same thing of either cutting the stud off and welding a new one on or just tapping the stud for a bolt to go into the stud....
Seeing I never learned to weld and have no welder to learn on I went to SXOR up in Clearfield and asked them what it would cost to weld me some new studs after I clean the brackets up some... they said $10 a piece so I got the xj back in the garage and here it looks after a few hours of cutting with a sawzall and a grinder....
As I was looking at this I thought maybe I should just drill a hole thru the center and get a long bolt and put it thru the shock and put a nut on the other side and save my son $20... what do you think?
p.s. I put some no-ox on the surface to prevent it from rusting until I know what I'm going to do.....
