having an issue with my 1998 sub the other day it died like someone shut off the key since then I have changed the fuelfilter put in a crank position sensor cheched fue pressure it goes up the norm area of 60 psi when I crank it i can hear poping in the aircleaned and puffs of black smoke comes out of the exhust if held to the floor and the poping increases cheched and has spark I am lost any ideas appreciated how does it react when the fuel regulator goes from my searches looks like it would still run.

It sounds like it could be lean. Check for the correct fuel volume. You can have pressure without the volume.

You can also try pounding on the bottom of the fuel tank. If the pump is marginal, it may start to run better with the jolt. I have changed dozens of fuel, pumps on these.

Poping threw the intake is a timing issue (gets spark when the intake valve is open)

Its has a distributor right?(can't remember when chvy did/didn't use them) is the rotor spinning with engine? the gear on the bottom of the distributor loves to wear away and cause a crank no start. I have also seen the distributor rotor fall off a Chevy distributor (Was odd) but I would pull the cap and have someone crank it while you watch to rotor turn. should turn with cranking and not have a dead spot... when you checked spark did you check one wire? was it consistent?

black smoke out the exhaust is a rich or incomplete burn symptom... could also be the regulator like stated above.

Sorry been working long shifts for the last few days got back to it last night. The stock ignition moduel tested bad so I bought one. I put it in and the engine was reacting the same. Took the new one out had it checked, it checked bad. I thought oh got a bad one. So I took it back got a new one put it in, same thing. Befoe I left the store with this new one I had it checked before left store, because its such a pain to take plate its on in and out. Took this one back that checked good before I left is now checking bad. What could be wipeing it out I have replaced the coil when I put in the moduel I had checked before I left the store any one have any ideas? I am have no idea what could be killing the moduel.

k will try tonight to change cap and rotor had to take upper intake off I'll see if I can get to it without but I wouldn't thing the distributor could wipe out the ignition moduel

Stalled while driving. No start. Spark plugs are soaked with raw gas.

Average Reported Mileage:

190293

Tests/Procedures:

1. Check for spark at the spark plugs.

2. Check scanner data for out of range sensor values.

3. Check for raw fuel in the fuel pressure regulator vacuum hose.

4. Check for about 55-62 PSI cranking fuel pressure.

5. Check the Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP) output with a lab scope.

1996 K2500 7.4

1999 K2500 7.4

1997 K2500 7.4

2000 K2500 7.4

Customer Concern:

No start has good fuel pressure, spark, injector pulse. Scan data all OK. Adding fuel did not help.

Average Reported Mileage:

139326

Tests/Procedures:

1. Open exhaust; if vehicle starts, replace restricted exhaust.

2. Disconnect fuel pump and try to run on alternate fuel.

3. Verify ignition will fire a spark tester set at 30 KV on all plugs.

4. Mark crank pulley at TDC number 1 cylinder. Using a timing light check the timing while cranking, it should fire at about 0 degrees. If mark is way off, check for slipped reluctor or distributor set in wrong.
