A day in Silverton

Fall is officially here in Colorado, the first snow has fallen in the mountains! Since one of our absolute favorite fall drives is up to Silverton, we loaded up the kids and the Carhart jackets and drove up to Silverton for the day. Needless to say, the drive up was beautiful!

After driving through town and saying no to the funnel cake store, we headed up to our "secret" lake. This is looking into the bowl from the road up.

Handing out in the freezing weather...thank God for Carharts! :D

It was getting colder by the minute so we decided to head up Hurricane Pass to see what the snow level was. On the drive up, it was awesome watching this storm blow in.

Once we started over the summit and started towards California, we quickly noticed that the road disappeared under the snow all along the backside of the mountain. After taking this great picture of Lake Como, Chris got my big ole truck backed up and turned around and back down Hurricane we went.

On the drive back into town the sunset on Kendall Mountain was amazing!

We still had a few minutes of daylight left so we cruised town, found an old Commando parked under a tree house (which my husband refused to buy for me), and then went to Handlebars for dinner. Enjoyed our after dinner hot cocoa by the roaring fire then headed home!

Nice! I can't believe the snow is here already. How were the fall colors, are they just starting?
What's really strange about this year is that the colors have barely started changing. But up on Coal Bank and Molas, a fair amount of leaves have already fallen. I'm quite concerned that we are in for an unhealthy amount of snow this winter. In Silverton though, the colors have just started. My all-knowing hubby thinks they'll peak next weekend.

 I love Silverton... I can't wake to get back... You pictures are killing me!
:D Then come back for a visit! This time of year, everything is a lot cheaper and quieter. With the exception of a few hunters, there is no one around!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh, (long sigh) I love Silverton. Took the family up for the week over 24th of July, we just loved it, in fact we were at your "secret lake" and skipped rocks in the rain. The number of mines and mills is unreal, especially when you consider how remote a lot of the country is and everything was brought in on horses and mules. I can't wait to go back spend another week (hopefully two). We put close to 400 miles on the old Blaze and only saw a fraction of the area.

What are you talkin' about?? We've been ready for you to move here, you're the one who's dragging his feet about a needing a job or something lame like that. :p

Lets plan a trip... sadly it will have to be next year (for me anyways)... These areas seem to be snowed in until late summer (the Bronco fam & Greg would know better). So next fall?
I like July before the monsoons hit. The days are longer, weather's warmer, and for the most part the snow is gone. If we get the crazy winter I think we might be in for, you'll probably still hit snow above tree line even in July. But the majority of roads will be open and the wildflowers will be awesome!

It really is amazing when you stop to think about how much work it took to build those mills and their work season is so short up there! Plus when you start looking at all the mines and their locations, those miners were CRAZY.
