A Syracuse man died Sunday afternoon in an Interstate 80 accident that closed westbound lanes near Coalville in Summit County for hours. At about 2:30 p.m., 40-year-old Ty Richens was driving west in a pickup truck near mile marker 70. The truck was pulling a camping trailer and a Jeep when he lost control of the vehicle, said Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Steve Winward. The vehicle rolled, killing the driver. A passenger, the man's father, was critically injured and transported by helicopter to Ogden Regional Medical Center. Three other passengers suffered minor injuries and were taken by ambulance to University of Utah Hospital. The cause of the accident was excessive speed, Winward said. "

You can hit excessive speed at 40 MPH if not loaded right or have a little cross wind etc.. So many variables when your that long and unstable.

(I'd be curious what the COD was.) X2

With the way this is worded would leave me to believe that he had the camping trailer attached to the pick up and the jeep attached to the camper. If this is true then this is the way I have seen in done countless times. The frame of the camper is just not suffecient enough to support the tounge weight of the other trailer nor is it enough to support the movements of the second vehicle (I would also assume that the jeep is on a flat-bed trailer). I am making a few assumptions here but that is the way I have seen it done more often than not. The camper trailer frames are adaquate to support itself and not a whole lot more.

Rollover hit it on the head. If not loaded correctly a small amount of speed could be dangerous.

Trailer could have been a 5th wheel or bumper pull.
Jeep could have been flat towed or on a trailer.

Could have been a large flatbed carrying both.

Too many options to speculate.

Read the comments. It was a F350 pickup, and 5th wheel. I assume the jeep was on a trailer, and not being flat towed. The guy was an actual truck driver.
I know several people that do this successfully. It is obviously pushing the limts. Not much margin for unexpected things happening.

Too bad for his family.

Yes, way too many variables, and the guy could have been going 80 mph. It's a bummer any way you look at it.

I still see it happening.I remember seeing a new quad cab powerstroke this last summer with a boat on a rack, the boat covered from the bed over the cab! This was no rinky dink alum either, more like a 14-16ft fiber. How he got it up there and secured is beyond me let alone unloading it at a lake.He was also pulling a big camp trailer with motorsicle's strapped to the front and back.....I was needing a cam for a pic,I've seen some big dumb load's but that took the cake.

Wow. I've thought that flat towing the jeep behind the 5th wheel was relatively safe. Something out of the ordinary must have happened.

The scary thing about a flat towed jeep is that it has no brakes, it can push the rear of the trailer around pretty easy under braking.
