I was up in the Uintas over the weekend, near Mill Hollow reservoir, above francis and woodland, near the east fork of the Duchesne.
My 2 year old was sliding down a steep spot in a trail on his bum, and I saw a spider going toward him. It looked like a big wolf spider, legspread probably 1.25", but it had white stripes on each of its legs, like at the joint type thing (several stipes on each leg). I remember the stripes very clearly, for overall color, if it wasn't black it was the darkest brown that has ever been.
Like I said, spidey was making his was toward my 2 year old, so I figured I'd stomp a boot in front of the spider to make him change course. I stomped, and the spider reared up on his back legs and started waving his front legs at me. (On a phsychological note, this was the point in my head where the spider went from being "a spider" to "him, or masculine") I was kinda stunned... I've never seen a wolf spider that agressive... this was also the point that I took a great look and paid close attention to the colors.
I stomped again, thinking he'd turn and run when I called his bluff, but instead he lunged at my boot, bouncing off of course, but still.. this bloody thing just jumped and launched an attack at my steel toed boot. This is one balsy spider...
At this point I decided to smoosh this overly agressive super bug, and raised my boot for a final assault, but he ran into the shrubs and disappeared.
Anybody have any idea what kind of spider this was?
