A while back, I bought m'self an engine hoist/engine stand combo on sale at Checker. The engine stand is a total POS, but the engine hoist seemed like every other decent hoist: could use some freakin' handles, pumped slow, but worked well, all 6 wheels swivel, and it folded up.

Well today, while I was cleaning out the garage, the left front wheel fell out of it's swivel. Seems it's pressed in there pretty poorly, and it had opened up the part on the bracket, and popped out..... rendering my hoist absolutely useless, with a 454 on the hook.

Of course it's out of warranty. :D Luckily, CAL Ranch has caster wheels and hopefully I can get one that works for my hoist, tonight.

Jamesgeologist and I have the same combo from checker...I have modified it slightly so it folds up in a more compact manner and I welded on a bolt for the bottom of the handle to slide over so it doesn't fall out of the holder.

We have had pretty good luck with it, it did a lot of heavy work lifting my spare caddy engine/tranny, and caddy rear axle/control arms. I will take a close look at the wheels and give em a buzz with the welder if they are looking shady!

I was looking at that, thinking of some field fix. The problem, which you'll see, si that the upper part of the wheel is sort of cupped flush to the bracket, so you can't get in there to weld anything... not to mention the high likelihood of welding a bearing stuck. :( :(

I got my lift for free, well, I had to help move some heavy stuff. But the lift has no brand name on it and I've used to lift motors and even lifted the front of a Dodge Daytona off the drivetrain... It has held up fairly well to what I've done... And it was free to me!

Now if someone was giving away an engine stand...

I'll give you the POS that came w/the hoist. Want it? :D

Just kidding. I am reasonably sure it can hold a TH400. I am going to try my hand at rebuilding one.

Tacoma, you're more than welcome to use my engine stand if you want to come grab it....

And if you run into trouble building that engine, I just happen to know someone who builds engines for a living. ;)

Thanks man!

I think the hoist will be up and running again, got a new wheel last night, no swivel and looks durable.

I do want some engine work done on this one... the PostIt has been written! MOOAHAAHAH

That's the place! I was trying to think of where I bought some for a table saw that I have. I think it was about $16 for all 4 and now I can wheel it around anywhere I want!! :D
