all wheel drive question

so, my girl had a front tire blow out on her '02 A6... i can see putting on two new fronts, but do i need to put brand new on all 4 corners? burt brother's is telling me it's standard to replace all 4 if one goes out on an all wheel drive. I really just don't see why that would be benefitial.

I know they like to put snow tires on all 4s but if you're going with the same tread type pattern, I'd just do the two, unless the rears are really worn.

see, that's how i see it. the front and rear tires really don't have alot to do with eachother as far as wear and driveablity are concerned... i am all for doing 2 fronts at one time or 2 rears at one time, but not all at the same time "because it's recommended".. by who? your sales manager?

From a mechanical stand point, i just can't see why they would say that.

On my ex girlfriends TT we just replaced two of the tires. It was my understanding that the drive train has more trouble with a good and bad tire on each side. So just buy two new ones and replace both front tires.

right... as i understand it, if you were to have the difference in diameter with a new tire and worn tire; it will put strain on the driveline and other parts in the all wheel drive system. Cause the AWD system will be trying to compensate for one tire constantly traveling farther than the other.

So, i'll get two fronts today, and some new rears on the next paycheck.. Girls can really add up.

it kind of like running 4.88 gears in the rear of your toy and 5.29's in the front when your in 4wheel drive. even though the tire size is the "same" they are different. it can blow up the transfercase gears in the car. but u normally dont see it. thats is why they recomend replacing all 4 at the same time

i talked to an Audi tech just now. He said that if a tire were to blow out on a set that has around 5,000 miles you'd be ok to replace the one. Any more than than that, and you'd want to replace atleast the two front/rear, where ever you lost the tire. He said that it shouldn't blow anything up to get the new fronts, and get new rears soon after. He said try not to let time exceed 60 days or so.

Not even apples to apples. The tire wear will be far less noticeable to the transfercase than the 4.88-5.29 gear difference.
