Aluminum Radiator Modifications

Do any of you know a shop that could do modifications on a new aluminum radiator? I need 2.5" to 3" removed from a lower corner, so the tank would have to come off and the tubes either rerouted or blocked off.

Back in the day we used to use J-mac to change the AMC outlets on radiators to Chevy, when we put 350s in the CJs.

I wonder if they could do it...?

Thanks Skippy, I'll try Bentley. I talked with Haun's and JMac, and an aluminum fabricator in North Salt Lake. All of them said thanks, but no thanks. If nothing works out I can return this aluminum and order a custom size. There is a small one available that works for old Mustangs that I could easily fit, but I'm wondering if it will cool a 350.

I run a stock CJ size with a 3 core radiator and fan shroud, with a 180* thermostat (recommended for the computer). No heat issues... (knock on wood) :D

I actually have 2 of these, both brand new. The problem is that putting the placement of the YJ steering box on the YJ frame. If I could take a 3"x3" lower corner out of the radiator it would solve my fitment problem.

That sucks. 3" body lift? ;)

This, but only under the grill--leave the tub where it is. Rake the hood the opposite way of "normal". Buck the system, do your own style! :greg:

Hahaha, yeah, that would make a statement for sure.

Post a pic, can it be TIG welded? I so I might have time in the next 2 weeks to look at it.

I'm not sure what happens in a radiator when you cut a tank off and start modifying. I would like to try it, but I think I'll just return the aluminum radiator and maybe try to either modify the brass one, or go with the smaller Mustang rad.

I've had good luck with Tanner's Radiator in AF. I wasn't doing anything super custom (re-brazing my heater core), but they do all the big rig radiators, and I'm betting it'd be a piece of cake for them. It's at least worth a call.

I agree. I've taken several things to tanners and they are great. I took a snowmobile cooler to them I thought was leaking, they cleaned it, pressure tested and found it was not leaking. When I went to pick it up they wouldn't accept any payment, saying they hadn't repaired anything because it wasn't leaking. I told them that I was happy to pay for their time to clean and test but they wouldn't accept.
