Another(lame) tire question, 18s or 20s

As some of you know I sold my Duramax and picked up a 2007 Suburban 1500. I don't want to get into the debate of towing capabilities, if that was a factor I would have kept the DMax. The question is, it has 20" wheels now with road tires, and the ride is phenomenal, to say the least. I will be adding a leveling kit and and going with a slightly larger 33ish tire. I know I'm going to suffer some ride quality when I get a stiffer side wall tire. Besides daily driving and towing the rig, I will be taking this off road so I want a little more aggressive tire. Question is, should I go 18's or stay with 20's?

I think the 18s will allow a for a little better off road experience. The 20s will have a better on road feel but will be subject to more rock damage off road. I really don't want a 10 ply tire just because the ride would suck. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Go with 18s. I was a 22 guy for a long time and when ever I hit the dirt I was afraid of tearing them up. With 18s the tires will balance a ton better and the bonus is 18 inch tires are less expensive.

I'd look at some 275 70 18's that seems to be the cheapest size 33 inch tire. I have them on the 100 series.

Thanks for all the input, I appreciate it. I've been looking at tires in the 285/65/18 range and they all seem to be 10 ply E rated. I'm not sure I want that much of a tire. Corban, are yours D or E rated? How does the 4Runner ride? BTW, I'm a bit blown away at how much both 18s and 20s cost.

I am currently running the new BFG Trail TA in a 275/70R18 which is a little taller and narower than the 285/65 above. They are really noisy. I thought
they had descent traction in all conditions until I had them on a really icy steep road. Blizzaks are needed for that road.

Tell me what tire and size you want and I will see what I can do for you.

I don't remember for sure but I think they are 10 ply e rated. I was hesitant to go with such a heavy tire at first so I used to run 275/70/18 Bridgestone Dueler A/T2 Revos with a P rating. We did not like them at all. The traction was average and they wore out really fast (~25K miles). Now I have the 285/65/18 Toyo A/T II XT and love them. They have ~20K miles on them and still look new. Probably 2-3 32nds worn. The ride might be a little harsher then the Revos but I haven't noticed. I think the wider more square profile has made it soak up the bumps slightly better. I believe my bolt pattern should be the same as yours, you are welcome to bring the burb over and take the tires for a test drive.

Thanks Rholbrook, I'm still leaning toward the 285 65 18s but I'm going to think on this for a couple of weeks. I put the leveling kit on the Burb yesterday and really like the way it turned out. Corban, I may take you up that. Actually maybe a ride in yours would suffice and be a whole lot less work. I am still running the stock wheels as of now but picked up some 18s off KSL a couple of days ago. This is all on hold because I need to focus on something else until the 17th. Thanks again for the help.
