Another Rover guy

Hey,
Ryan here. Awesome board here, I only found it two days ago, and I can't stop taking a look. I'm 26 from Pleasant Grove. I drive a '96 Landrover Discovery, which is still a work in progress. Right now she has a 2" heavy duty OME lift with 1" RTE spacers. Rockware: extended trailing links, break lines, shock mount relocaters, bilsteins up front and rancho RS9005's in the rear, big foot 265/75/16 AT's, GBR front and rear driveshafts, waiting on my Rovertym slimline bumper, and rock sliders to come in, can't wait to get them on, and a pretty kick ass stereo. She does pretty good out there though, especially with the center locking diff.

I know some are thinking poser, but I just started modifying her this last summer when my cherokee was rolled. (notice I didn't roll it... little brothers are great!)

Next will be the GBR heavy duty axels, 4:11 gears, and some lockers. I do have a winch for it, but it's a little too small for a big heavy rover, a warn T4500 off of my wrangler. If anyone knows where I can trade it in for a 9500, that would be great.

As for life, I travel a lot with my work, and spend the rest of my time with friends up AF canyon. Most of which are married and under lock and key now, so wheelin buddies are always a plus.

Rovers are fun to pick on :) welcome. Post up some pics of your rig, lets see what you have. Hang out here long enough and you will find plenty of wheeling buddies, both locked and unlocked ones (pun intended)

Yeah, Ill give you that.. they are fun to pick on. Funny how I decided to buy it. We were working on the film, "Saints and Soldiers," and I had a 97 cherokee sport, 3" lift, 31" BFG AT's, and a rear detroit locker. I had large steel morters to haul all over the snowy mountain side. Went there to start, and my jeep, as much as I loved it, wouldn't make the climb on the muddy snowy back road. So I lugged them up by hand. The next day my Mom says, "why don't you take my landrover." She just had a stock '96 disco. I didn't think it would do any better, but took it. It climbed all over that hill side. 6 months later I had one of my own. Still love jeeps, and would still have mine if one didn't blow the engine, and the other hadn't been rolled.

The only wheelin picks I have right now are in my profile. That was just the test drive, so the pic is fully stock, but show's it's not just a mall crawler. I love the rover, but also love to use it. In fact, it has a nice bashed quarter panel right now from the rock section on the way up to the lifts at mineral basin. Made it through three other times with no problem, and then got a little too cocky... but it just adds charactor, and gives me an excuse to get a rovertym rear bumper soon.

welcome friend. I've got a 95 classic and I just picked up a 97 disco. I'd love to see that new slim line bumper when you get it. I've looked at them on line, but I don't think they have very good pictures. So bring it by some time. I'm at land rover a. f. monay through friday. I'm always happy to see more rover guys on here.

Hey Andy,
I'm at Land Rover A. F. all the time. Always hittin up Kent and John for info. They really are great guys. The part guys are pretty cool too. When I get my slim line, I'll definately bring it in. Steve at Rovertym has a lot of work on his hands right now. He's gonna try and get the bumper and sliders to me before the end on the month, because work is taking me to Illinois, New York, Vancouver, and possible Wisconsin all through May and June. It'll just kill me to know my bumper has gotten there, and have to wait two months to see it when I'm on the road, but we'll see.

What department are you in at Land Rover?

See you there,
Ryan

For anyone who read this post before I deleted most of it, I meant to take my frustration on Chad, not Andy. I apologize Andy, but I do not like your co-worker Chad.

Andy,
Is there any chance you can find out what Engine ECU I need for a 97 disco with VIN #SALJY1244VA730166? It would be nice to get this vehicle back on the trails without having to spend $2000. I have access to a working ECU of ERR7377. Will it need to be programmed for that vehicle, or should it just plug in?

Sorry once again Andy, I thought you were Chad.

Hey V Dawg,
Have you tried asking the guys on www.discoweb.org ? Or tried Nathan at http://www.discountbritishparts.com ? both sources are very helpful and knowledgable, plus many of the guys on discoweb are Land Rover mechanics, and some really know their stuff. When you find the part #, you might also try http://www.carcannibal.com/rover/ they have lots of parts rovers and rebuilt parts. They might have a matching ecu off of one of theirs that's still in working order. I just got a transfer gear box from them, and they were also very helpful and friendly. Even locally, last I heard Trans West wrecking yard had a D1 as well... who know's, you may just get lucky, and save yourself some cash.

However it works out, Good luck man, I know what it feels like to have your disco down. I'm finishing a valve job on mine today, after having put a new engine in it a year ago... It's my fault, the valve job that is. I should have upgraded to the carbon cutter valves when I had her apart last year, but had allready maxed out the credit card, and just couldn't afford anything else. So I cleaned the valves I had, and hoped for the best. Oh well, It's a love hate relationship.

I am sorry that I missed your original post. I would like to know what happened between you and Chad. I will leave my opinion to myself.
The ecu that they told me that your car needs is a err6738. I'm not sure if we looked it correctly though. If it is not the same part number as the old one, it will not work. If you do find one, it might need the security immobilization learned before it will start. Good luck, Andy D (not Chad) :D

Hey Ryan, I am back in the shop. I think that I remember who you are. Didn't you make some fancy water cannon thing that is all diamond plated?

Yup, that's me. One thing I love about my work is the different stuff I gotta come up with to do the job, and being film, it's gotta look good too, so I have fun with it.

You should see the fan I'm building right now. 30hp electric with digital controles, 6 foot, 6 blade propeller. The propeller was custom made from wood laminate on a 6 axis router, and it has inverted tips, which keeps the noise down on a sound stage. I know some think 30 horsepower isn't a lot, but the motor weights 330 lbs, and the fan will put out over 50 mph wind from 25 feet away, which isn't bad.

Can't wait till I finish my hurricane fan, I have a mercer 454 out of a '96 scarab, it's gonna have a 7 or 8 foot bladespan, I haven't finished researching the props on this one yet, and it will put out winds over 100 mph from 25 feet away. It'll be noisy, so an outdoor fan only. But I love getting to design and build this stuff.

Probably see you at landrover soon, I was there yesterday buying a window regulator. Are you the one with the green lifted disco?
