Escelator (sp?) and Hells Gate are optional obstacles on the Hells Revenge Trail... they were never "officially" parts of the trail, and to my knowledge they were never "officially" open to use, rather they just didn't enforce it for some time.

You must understand that Hells Revenge/Fins n' Things are within the Sand Flats Recreation Area, they got alot of use from bikers, etc... seeing a vehicle on every possible rock doesn't please many of them... ;)

Fact of the Day...

The famous Slickrock "bike" trail... was actaully pioneered/mapped by local Moab resident Dick Wilson, in the mid-60's.

Sure doesn't look much like a Mountain Bike....

Exactly my point... ;)

As to tofu:
Extremely popular in the Orient today, tofu was first used in China over 2,000 years ago. Experts believe that its production began sometime during the Han dynasty, in the second century B.C. According to one Chinese legend, tofu was invented when a cook decided to experiment by flavoring a batch of cooked soybeans with the compound nagari. Instead of flavored soybeans, he wound up with bean curd. Nagari is frequently used in the production of tofu today. From China, tofu was introduced into Korea, and reached Japan in the eight century A.D.

So yes, they had tofu...

Now birk sandals on the other hand...

If your really intersted in the history of the trails, chat with one of the RR4W's... they will know alot more about the history of those obstacles than I... :D

Sand Flats Recreation Area (part of Grand County, but administered by the BLM) has always maintained that ANYTHING that is not part of the marked Hells Revenge trail is off-limits to vehicles. While this technically even means the hot tubs, they seem to be most concerned about Hells Gate, Escalator, and one other steep climb. They have posted Hells Gate numerous times in the past, but the signs always dissappear almost immediately. They just recently painted the "stay on the trail" signs on these obstacles.

We (RR4W) have argued till we're red in the face to no avail. Running escalator and Hells Gate don't hurt a damned thing, it's all slickrock! But Sand Flats dosen't see it that way. We have been working with the BLM to try and get the routes recognized, and even included as part of our 5-year EJS permit, but it's going to be an uphill battle. We also lobbied to get the routes included in the new RMP that is coming up.

My suggestion is for everyone to write , email, or call the Moab BLM and ask them to legalize the routes. Tell them that the routes are well known among 4-wheelers all over the country, and people come to Moab wanting to try these famous obstacles. If they are closed, then people will just go and create some other illegal route, and possibly do even more damage. We need more LEGAL hard-core stuff in Moab. Maybe if enough people ask, they will listen. And please, do not create any new routes on Hells Revenge. The more tire marks we create on previoulsy un-tracked areas, the more ammunition they have for closing it all down.

I was just reading the thread about Hell's Rvenge over at Pirate, and want to say THANK YOU to Cody, Hickey, Herzog, and the others for thier spot-on comments. You guys rock!

At this point, it doesn't really matter WHY the BLM has closed off these obstacles. If we ever want to get them back (or make any other new trails), we've got to obey the rules, and fight within the system. By going off-trail or ignoring closures, we're cutting our own throats.

Glad to have you guys on our side!

I always thought common sense was common, but I guess I was wrong. There are some real idiots on that forum over there.

In Johnson Valley, do the wheelers have free roam, cna they go where ever they wish? If so, I wonder if that is why people are saying things like "If I want to go climb that rock, I should be able to, and my friends should be able to watch me do it"

They definately have a different mindset about it.

If I see any of them littering or deliberatly going off trail, I'm gonna have a talk with'em and I'm gonna notify the BLM. It's the only way... I don't want to be an asshole about it, but something has to be done. I don't want to lose any more trails because some jerks from out of state decided to abuse them.

Hmm. That sounds familiar. People from out of state getting our trails closed.

Ditto, Thanks for tryin to talk sense into the people that will get the whole area closed. Reading some posts over there has me depressed about the future of Moabs best trails. If someone really cant see the difference between a parking lot in the city and Hells Revenge, we are doomed.

Exactly how I felt when I read the post's over there earlier. There's just alot of ignorant people running around these day's,as long as they get their fun that's all they care about, but yet all the good people that try to make an effort, obey guidlines, end up getting shafted.

I was just on Hells last weekend. they've changed the trail since last year even. they were painting new flames, and some of the main trail has been changed to an alternate route now, like the rubble trouble route. the main trail markers take you the easy way out now. hopefully they don't close that off, too. :-\

The Rubble Trouble loop is part of RR4W's permitted EJS route, and is open.

I have never read a more useless thread (the PBB one)... They think trail closures are unfair and bull ****... I think the fact I have to share oxygen with some of them is BS.... ;)

Good work to all of those staying involved in these issues, Jeff from RR4W, thanks for all the updates.. lets fight these battles in the real life, not on the BB's... :D
