Anti-Virus selling Virus

OREGON85

from OREGON
I think a got a virus that is trying to sell me anit-virus and anti spyware stuff. It almost looks like a windows thing, but in some ways it really doesn't. I keeps poping up telling me to down load stuff from spywareisolator2008.com. I can't think of anything I may have done to get this. Has anyone delt with this before? What should I do?

had that a few weeks ago. downloaded adaware and spybot to get rid of it. it took a few runs for it to completely go away.

My parents had something similar, I ended up using google and removed it manually. (lots of registry entries, directories, etc) it sucked and reminded me why I don't do windows for a living. :greg:

That is kind-of the most annoying thing, I always thought that's what you had to do to get a virus which I don't do.

I tried housecall, but it randomly shut down before it finished. McAfee and AVG both say nothing is wrong. I'll try adaware this afternoon after work.

Spork, how did you do it manually?

I believe my parents version was called something like XP antivirus and so I searched on the name which led me to a site like this:
http://www.xp-vista.com/spyware-removal/xp-antivirus-2008-removal-instructions-xp-antivirus-2008
and
http://fix-computer-problem.com/rogue-antispyware/xpantivirus/xpantivirus.html
and

There are similarities in the 3 so I did all of them. :greg:

I've had a couple of computers (not work ones) have the same/similar thing. One I was able to remove and the other after spending two-three hours with, I just blew away.

Just backup your important files and wipe your drive. If you have noticeable spy ware lurking, you probably have a lot more that is unnoticed.

There are a lot of gaming, gambling, torrent, etc... sites that will get you spyware. You need to keep your operating system up to date and make sure you have some kind of firewall.

... Firewall that will stop incoming AND outgoing! Some only do incoming....

Also, try booting your computer in safe mode and pull all of your internet cables out (only leave the keyboard, mouse and monitor plugged in) before you start trying to remove it.
