Just started today w/ my sprinkler project. It's worked great for the past few years but this last winter I turned off the water but forgot to open the relief valves so I turned it on and found 3 broken places in my valve box area. I had to dig out the entire thing to get to places where I can splice in new fittings, etc. I decided to move the entire valve system over about 6 feet so that I can get trailers between my house and shop if I ever need.

This is what I unearthed.

whoever set this up did not make it easy to rearrange everything. I'm moving the valves over to the hole to the left. the main line runs around the corner tight to 2 other lines and the cluster of sprinkler lines at the bottom of the pic is a crazy mess.

It took me forever to get to this point. Since the boxes filled up with water when I turned it on, it disturbed the dirt and when it settled and dried, all of the lines and most of the valves were buried in mud/dirt.

fun.

Were your valves even in a box? By the looks of them, it doesn't look like it. Make sure to rearrange them so they fit in a box (or two if needed). I did my entire sprinkling system when I moved in to my house, never again. :)

I had to replace 20' of 1" main this year. I hate all the yard work spring brings but not as much as i hate an ugly yard.

Trying to avoid mine until 1 June. I think I can make it that far the grass is still the greenest on the block. I have something wrong with the automatic system so I'd rather be digging for pipe then chasing electrical.

Yeah worked on ours yesterday, got about 3/4 done before I had my other obligations (OSRCCS)

Every year we either have to dig up sprinklers and bring them up more so they actually hit grass, or fine and dig them out so they work, and need to replace or clean several of them to make them work... Gets annoying lol

I learned the hard way too. Now I blow out my lines each fall with an adapter I soldered together using female water hose connector and a male air hose connector and have not had any problems. Now I am trying to figure out a drip system for the garden that is fool proof.

I had two little pop-up heads that were squirting straight up. Everything else seems to work. I do have two gear-drive heads that seem "sticky", they don't cycle through their range consistently. I may end up replacing those....

This is my new plan. The auto drains have always worked in the past for me but after spending a few days digging fixing and back filling blowing them out seems like less work.

I think you can buy those now so you would not have to make one.

Yeah you can, we blow our system out every year. After looking at our grass, it is dry and yellowing in spots so our sprinklers are going on tonight.

Wait, you guys don't stand on the front lawn with a hose? Where would I get one of these 'sprinklers' you speak of??

That pic doesn't look near as ugly as the mess I cleared at a previous house. PO planted bushes an a tree right next to a 5 station box in the mid 1970s... And of course, the pipe on the very bottom was the broken one... Need to reconfigure my front and rear sprinklers this year. Not looking forward to it at all.

I had to extend a few popups 2", as my turf thickness has increased over time. I always blow out my system with compressed air in the fall, which prevents frozen lines. I have a filter before my pump, so I just drilled out a 1/2" PVC cap and screwed in a male air chuck to connect my airhose too. Unscrew the 1/2" cap on the filter, install the air chuck adapter to pressurize the system, then blow out each zone.
