So I picked up a 74 xl250. when I got it it ran ummmm not so good. so we rebuilt the carb, set the points (the screws were not even in). It ran well for a minute then shut off. stumped I pulled the tank off and found that the spark plug wire from the coil broke. No big deal bought one from Steadmans. Installed it and no luck. I checked for power (magneto power to coil) 6.1V to the coil. Figured the coil was bad took it back and they tested it... Tested good. so this is where my issue lies. No spark, Coil tests good, power to the coil. Any ideas?

A kill switch stops the engine by routing the power normally going to the coil to ground, so you need to try to disconnect a wire from the switch to interrupt the path to ground. A bad switch will be maintaining a complete circuit to ground all the time. I don't know if this is very clear, so just disconnect one or both wires from the kill switch and try to start.
