Anyone on here a sidekick expert? My dad lives in Vegas and has a 93' Sidekick that runs terribly. It acts like it's not getting any gas and sputters and dies. It's got a new fuel pump and fuel filter.

He isn't very mechanically minded and is thinking of bringing it up here to see if I can figure out what's going on. I don't know much about sidekicks but would welcome any help.

I may also be able to convince him to pay for repairs assuming it's quality work and the rig runs great afterwards.

is this a sudden development, or has it been getting worse over time? When did the problem start and how long has it been going on?

It's never ran great but it's progressively become worse. I believe it's a 16v motor with roughly 125,000 miles on it.

It sputters, dies, has low power and in general runs terrible. It also smells like fish, but that could be unrelated. :D

He loves it and it really is the perfect little vehicle for his needs if it just ran decent.

Plugged cat would progressively get worse over time. If it starts fine, then goes to crap, i would suspect the cat.

I would start with the standard tune up stuff plugs/wires/rotor has he at least kept up on maintenance (oil changes/filters?)

I believe he has new cap, rotor, plugs and wires along with new oil, oil filter, air filters etc. When he bought it less than a year ago he did all the basic tune up stuff.

I was thinking the same thing and asked him about it, he swears he put a new cat and muffler on it but maybe in his old age he thinks he did both but only did the muffler.
