Anyone ever had a liver biopsy?

Seth

These go to 11
I have to have one on friday. I know it involves a big spring loaded needle but not much else. I have heard it take a few days to recover. That you can't do much or your liver will bleed.

Have you had one? Is it a big deal? What should I expect as far as recovery? I'd rather not know the gory stuff. So you can skip that. ;)

Cant' say I have... I would imagine taking a chunk of any major organ requires due caution... I've had bone marrow sampled, and that hurt for a couple days.. I'd think your liver might be a bit tender too. :D

I'll ask my brother if I can get ahold of him... he's actually DONE liver biopsies. :D

My mother had a couple of them. Hers were in and out at the surgical center, a long needle and a couple of days taking it really easy and then the rest of the week not getting too rowdy.

What's up? You got hepatitis or a form of liver disease? My mother had primary biliary scerocious of the liver caused by hepatitis

I have had a kidney biopsy. It's like you described. About a 5 in needle with a claw machine graber at the end. I was out patient went in the morning and left that night. I had to stay awake for it, but I was all numb. I was just a little sore. The worst of it was my butt from the numbing shot. Still have a dot scar on my back from it.

I've had one on my kidney for a transplant and again after transplant.
It's done under a local, small cut to allow the doctor to insert the spring loaded biopsy tool to harvest the sample. When the doctor pulls the trigger it will burn for a few seconds in the area harvested. Ask your doctor if he will have someone from the lab to make sure he gets a good sample the first time.
The liver will like you said bleed very easy since it filters your blood. Rest is your best friend.

Hope it goes well for you.
PM me if you need more info.

Thanks for the info. Not sure what is going on with it. I get blood work every month and it has been on a roller coaster for the last two years. Never gets real bad but I have to get it figured out so they keep me on my bitchin' ms meds.

Had a bone marrow biopsy and it was far from fun. Can't imagine a liver biopsy being any better. Good luck to you, hope all goes well.
