 What's the story on that one?

It was the first trip out on the new suspension, and at full compression the tire was really getting into the bumpers and close to ripping them off (just the stock plastic bumpers on a ZJ). I got tired of it and only had a wood saw, so I got to cutting. Not exactly the cleanest cut ever, but it fixed the problem.

this isn't the same guy with more than the value of his jeep under the hood of his Miata--and with plans to buy a Lotus or something is it?

$99 for a sawzall that can be used for a variety of random tasks is out of the question!

Oh snap! I forgot all about that. Thanks for bringing me back to reality there good sir. ;)

for like $40 you can hit just about any pawn shop and get your own sawzall... when I cut the fenders on my cj I started with a sawzall but it only cut straight lines so I moved over to a skill saw... its alot better for control and it would make round cuts...

So whats recommended for cutting fenders? (not the tool)

how far is too far on the front and back
of an XJ

for tire clearance.

There isn't really a too far. You just trim as much as you need to clear the tires. Trimming fenders is a much better solution than lifting higher--at least if you like to wheel the rig.

Front you can go as far as your content. However on the back, you have to worry about the pinch welds. Most people cut to the bottom of the pinch welds and then do a bunch of vertical cuts and roll over the pieces.
