Well I'm new to RME. I live in Lindon. I just picked up this 87 4Runner off KSL. It's the 4th 4Runner I've owned in 2 years. This is my first 1st gen that I've owned. I tore into it on Monday and I'm almost ready to pull the engine and transmission to rebuild it. I drained the oil and out came a wonderful chocolate milkshake. If anyone want's to lend a hand or laugh at me as I try to pull it out you're welcome stop by Saturday the 25th.

Welcome, that's a very clean 1st gen! I may be around on Saturday. Let us know what time you're planning on pulling the tranny.

I'll be stating about 9:00 am. I have just a few more bolts to undue before I can pull the engine and transmission. The actual removal may not happen till 10:30 - 11:00.

I'll buy pizza and soda (sorry no beer) for anyone that wants to come help.

I'm on 1025 east in Lindon. It's a short street and you'll see me in the garge working on it.

are you pulling the engine and tranny together as one unit, or are you separating them?

I was planning on pulling them together as I can't seem to get to the three top bolts that mate the trans and engine. I'm open to any other ideas. I don't care too much how they come out I'd just like them both out.

some people cut round holes in the floor of their tranny tunnel to access those. Then they fill them with those rubber body plugs. That's what I'd do, but I don't know how much modifying you want to do to your truck. I also have a "custom" 14mm that I cut in half for this very purpose. You're welcome to use it. I just cut the box end about 3" from the end. Not much leverage, but it fits in there nicely. They I just push on it with another wrench or a pry bar or something. It's worked for me in the past.

I still like the idea of cutting the round holes in the tranny tunnel (interior sheet metal) to access them.

Try either raising the back of the tranny till it hits the tunnel, or removing the cross member and letting the tranny hang. One of those methods should give you plenty of room to get those top 3 bolts. It will be much easier to remove them separate.
