Alright, if you read my last thread, you know I have an np435 in need of a rebuild But I have a 5.0 and AOD out of an 87 Grand Marquis that I aquisitioned just recently. I was just going to swap the engine and save the tranny for a later project, but now may be the time to do both. My question is: is the AOD worthy, what should I do to make it worthy, or should I just rebuild the 435? Money is no object

The AOD doesn't have a good reputation in trucks. It's pretty light weight for any kind of serious use. If you really want to do an auto tranny your best bet is a C-6. They are all but bullet proof and can be seriously modified to run behind some incredibly healthy motors. With a low gearset installed (1 & 2 from an E4OD) they really have pretty good gear ratios. the biggest plus is that they are cheap compared to other auto trannys.

If you're really set on using the AOD I'd take it to a performance tranny shop & have them really work it over, but you could buy at least 2 really built C-6's for what the AOD build will cost.

It seems like I read a few times that the C6 doesn't easily fit into a Bronco. I recall in one of the early Bronco Driver magazines they did a great job describing which transmissions work well with the Bronco. Also, seems like Driven Auto Parts in AZ has several tranny solutions for Broncos.

There is a lot more that can be done with an AOD now. Do some web surfing, there are some specialty builders out there. AOD got a bad rap, but they can be built, I'll see if I can find some links.
No, c6's don't fit in EB's well. If it were me I would use a c4....I do....Unless you are building huge HP, a good c4, built with good parts will hold up well!! They are small and light, easy to fit....AA has a new shorty adpt to mate with the atlas too!
There is also a SB Ford to chev auto adapter if you want to go that way. Almost forgot, C6's are not very efficient, they suck a lot of power....

I think I'm going to wait on the tranny for a while anyway, since I am focusing more time, energy, and $$$ on my engine swap right now. So I'll have some time to research.
