The locker stays locked and the compressor rarely kicks on, I am just wondering why it leaks in the diff when I don't use my locker for a while and when I turn it off and on a few times and drive around it seals up and does not do it again. Is that normal? I have contacted Tim before at ARB about other problems I have had in the past but this one is not as serious. Instead of a PM I usually get him if I call ARB or e mail them a tech question.

Does anyone know if you can put a Detroit Toyota 8in locker in the rear of a Tacoma? I can't find one specifically for the Tacomas.

How do you know it leaks? It is normal for the compressor to cyle every 4-10 minutes...

The only lockers I know of for the 8.2" are the Eaton LSD and the Lockright...

When it leaks it blows air out of the breather and the compressor kicks on 1 to 2 min. It leaked on Friday Then stopped and has not leaked since. I had a similar problem where it would leak when it was cold and seal when the diff was warm. They had to replace a plastic piece in the locker that had four cracks in it. That has only happened on Tacoma lockers they tell me. I drove with it locked for 30 min in the dirt today and it only kicked on once so I am thinking it may of been a fluke. I also drove around the block a few times which I shouldn't have because it tore chunks out of my tires and thats reserved for the rocks. :(

Those and the Aussie locker are all I have found also. I think because of the TRD Tacoma it limits the normal ones since most people buy the TRD if they wanted a locker.

Ah ha... had you only mentioned that from the start..

So yes, your locker is leaking air into the housing... this can happen in a couple spots, some more likely than others...

1. The O-rings, naturally they cannot contain 100% of the air, having an open, clear axle breather is essential. Obviously it should leak enough to cyle your compressor more than once every 4-10 minutes... When sitting for a while, it is fair to assume that the synthetic o-rings will dry out a but (as well as the seal surface) so leaking may be normal (mine have never done that)...

2. The copper air tubing, I have head of people cracking them by either a crappy install or a crappy part that was installed. Once they are in and hooked up, they should either work, or not work, not intermitent... thus we can eliminate this.

3. The bulkhead fitting... these can leak inside the housing as well as outside of the housing, you may try snugging up the outside fitting and see if that does anything, but once again shouldn't be intermittent, which leads us back to the O-rings...

BTW, what is this locker in?

BTW, I just remembered a case like yours... his ARB wouldn't stay compressed (compressor cycled every minute)... He narrowed it down to the O-rings. He took a chance and re-filled the diff with a synthetic lube as well as some Lucas stabilizer, and teh O-rings begain to seal... Not sure if it was a fluke, but it is worth a try. Also, if your pinion is rotated up (as result of lift) you should overfill* the diff when you add fluid...

*technically you are not "overfilling" the diff, rather filling it to is proper level with respect to the stock location of the diff filler hole.

Its in a 1999 Tacoma. The front has never had a problem and this is the third problem for the rear. I had the seals replaced in January 2004 because it was spitting gear lube out at the compressor. I also had a similar problem in September 2003 when it would leak when it was cold and they replaced a plastic piece in the locker.

Who diagnosed bad seals the first time oil was spitting out the solenoid? This can also be caused by a partially/fully blocked diff breather line...

Who have you had do the work?

Jack-It did the work. We had to do some tests for ARB for 1 week to determine if that was the problem. The lines had to be blown out and then driven without using the locker.

It leaked again today in the morning and then sealed again. When I talked to Tim at ARB he said he will replace the locker since it had problems before and have Six States do the work. Thats excellent customer service. :D
Thanks
