i just got off of RS with Smokincamel and some other friends. my buddy's cherokee has ARB's front and rear. we noticed that they wouldn't disconnect until we played around with them in the Chevron p-lot. only the front went off, the rear is still engaged. does anyone have any ideas as to what we can do? what would cause this and so on? thanks for your help.

Check the solenoid...
Check to make sure the differential has fluid...
Next would be to remove the diff cover and investigate...

If both were giving you problems.... I would take a look at the soplenoids... can you hear the air release?

I have run ARB's for quite some time, never as much as a problem... the worst I ever get is that they may take a few feet to dissengage and steer easily, but that can be planned for.

In talking with the techs at ARB, one of the biggest problems (besides o-rings which are 99% installer error) is bent axle housings. If you have a slightly bent housing, it can casue alot of problems in the ARB unit. I really agree with this since 95% of the cruiser owners I know with ARB's love em'... and cruiser axles rarely bend when compared to a D30, D35 or other app? Sounds like a reasonable explaination to me...

ARB's for life... :D

we turned on the comp. and each locker, then let them sit for a minute, then turned them off one at a time. we could hear and feel the air release out of the comp. the rear in this cherokee is the chrystler 8 1/4. so, should we pull the diff cover of and have a looksy? cause pulling the ARB out is a PITA.

You can pull the cover, but without pulling the carrier, you really can't see that much...

Someone else chime in on this, but isn't the 8-1/4" notorious for bending... such that most recomend at least a truss of some kind?

Either way, once the fluid is drained and the diff. cover is off.... it isn't too much more work to pull the shafts.. mabey just a couple mins... and from there its just a few more bolts and the carrier is out...

I dont know if the 8.25 is notorious for beding but I dont think its a whole ton stronger than the D35 so it would not surprise me one bit if it is bent or tweaked a little...listen to kurt, he knows what he is talking about:p

cool, thanks guys. i'll pass that info on. i don't know if this is a dumb question here, is there an easy way to tell if the housing is tweaked? and if so, what then? get a BFH and untweak it?:D

I cant really tell you an "easy" way to tell if its bent but the best solution(rather than trying to have it straightened) would be just get a new axle...even if its the same thing, not worth the time or money to put into it...

the kid has a D44 he was gonna put under the jeep. then he found there was a ARB for his chrystler 8 1/4, and he went with that. maybe the best thing to do is throw that 44 under there. (which is what i said all along!)

Not really an easy way..

but,
drain fluid...
remove the diff cover...
pull the center pin...
pull the c-clips and axleshafts...
using a light at one end, look through and see if you can see misalignment...

even then, it may still be bent and not noticible to the eye...

Yup... The 8-1/4" is marginally better than the 35 but still prone to bending and axle failure. Good luck :D

This would explain why so many people either love, or hate ARB's. I have never had a prob with mine, but they were also installed by the best, and installed in reliable axles to begin with.:)

to quote Kurt "ARB's for life"

Exactly my thoughts Jeremy... it really does come down to installation and application. For example you never hear of a cruiser one having a problem but D30 ones are prone to axle problems and bent housings...

Right Mbryson... :D

my buddy pulled it apart today nd found a mojor kink or clog going to the rear ARB. they are redoing the lines are are 99.98% sure this was the cause. i told him to put his D44 under there with a disc conv., and he said "yep". so hopefully he'll ditch the 8 1/4!

The 8 1/4 really isn't that bad of a rear end, I would much rather have an 8 1/4. To be honest with you I really haven't seen too many 8 1/4's with problems, if anything installer error. I also haven't seen any bent ones.

i gauruntee you that it is installer error. he did it himself with his auto shop teacher quite hastily just before EJS.
