Are there bumper laws here in Utah?

I want to cut my front bumper down a little more to give it a better approach angle and to give it a "mean" look. Are there any laws of how wide of a bumper you must have?

Bumpers must be the full track width of the vehicle and be a minimum of 4 1/2"
This is from the state safety handbook.
I think there is something about it being a certain size in height, such as 4.5" tall.

Hopefully someone has a link to that section of the code, Otherwise, all YJ bumpers would not meet that restriction. :rofl:

41-6-148.33. Bumpers.

(i) at least 4.5 inches in vertical height;
(ii) centered on the vehicle's center line; and
(iii) extend no less than the width of the respective wheel track distance.
(b) Bumpers shall be securely mounted, horizontal load bearing, and attached to the vehicle's frame to effectively transfer impact when engaged.

OOHH!! I always wondered about this definition!
[(l)] (i) "Wheel track" means the shortest distance between the center of the tire treads on the same
axle. On vehicles having dissimilar axle widths, the axle with the widest distance is used for all calculations.
(3) The provisions of Sections 41-6-148.29 through 41-6-148.33 do not apply to the following
vehicles:
(a) implements of husbandry;
(b) farm tractors;
(c) road machinery;
(d) road rollers; and
(e) historical vehicles or horseless carriages that have been restored as near to original condition
as is reasonably possible.

I don't think I wheel with one person that has a front bumper... Open roof Jeep that is. Maybe the cops are just selective? Anyone been pulled over for this besides crapmanche?

I may be mistaken but I think Greg was pulled over a few years ago in his truck for the bumper not being tall enough... :confused:

I got pulled over a year ago for my bumper not being wide enough. I knew the guy so he didn't give me a ticket. He also gave me crap for no light on the rear plate.

I got stopped in Uintah County about three years ago. The UHP busted out tickets for insufficient fender flare, track width too wide and broken windshield. He also wanted to get me for no seatbelt, speeding and the bumber not wide enough. I busted out my tape measure and my copy of the safety code and asked him to measure everything for documentation. I drove away with a fix it for the windshield and for one missing mudflap, as well as a 71mph in a 65mph. All in all, not too bad for roadside justice. I should have fought the speeding, but I really didn't want to spend anymore time in Vernal than I had to. ;)

Back about 6 years ago when bigger rims started being produced more.... i bought some 18's for my celica. It was the first set of 18's the tireshop had ever done.. so they even had to buy a new machine to do it. Anyways... about two weeks after that I got pulled over for my rims being TOO BIG. haha... i laughed that fixit ticket all the way to the judge.

With the jeep though i've been pulled over for mud flaps about 5 times and no front plate about 4 times. For the mudflaps i just say I have them and forgot to connect them after going offroad. I've gotten 3 tickets for front plate... and i just ziptie it to the bumper... get it passed off... then take it right back off :)
