Has anyone ever converted a non power steering CJ to a powered one?
I was wondering what all it takes to convert to power steering and would love to hear what you all have to say about the matter...
I have a power steering pump and bracket to mount it now just need the rest to make it all work... so pipe up peeps

I think back in the day. People used to put saginaw boxes on their cj's. I'm not sure what vehicle they pulled em off of. Not much help, but maybe someone who has done it will chime in.:)

I can't say what it takes on a CJ but I did it on my Scout 800A & it was probably the best upgrade I've done yet. No early Scout's came w/ PS so it required getting parts from a Scout II. I picked up a PS pump w/ hoses, bracket, crankshaft pulley, PS box, new Borgeson U-joint for the steering column (due to different shaft size on new box), new pitman arm (but I doubt you would need a new one??). I reinforced the frame both inside and out and cut inner fender to make it fit and that's about it. With a CJ I bet it would be a bolt in w/ using a CJ donor:)

Not much to it you can probably get the power steering pump off a wagoneer, dodge, whatever in the wrecking yard ($30 when I bought mine)

The manual CJ gear boxes use a different size input shaft than the power steering gear boxes so the bell coupler at the end is different. However the end on the manual gear box is the same size that newer jeeps use (wranglers, cherokees, etc).

Note: You cant buy thoes bell couplers that go on the end of the steer shaft. If you can buy one(possible) it's discouraged. You can weld on a spicer mini U-joint to make it stronger and serviceable. I'm using all the cj set-up on the chev350. Just has a fabbed bracket to hold the pump to the block. If that helps. Turns 35's well.

The imput shaft is where I ran into a brick wall. The TJ seems to be a good option. Lemme know how it goes. I wanna do the same to My '52.

Bought my bell coupler at Mepco. Never had an issue with it. If he uses something other than the CJ power steering gear he can use the one that he is using now. (no change in the shaft)

The CJ input shaft is 13/16" on a power steering gear box
the CJ input shaft is 3/4" on a manual steering box

the majority of the saginaw gear boxes use a 3/4" input shaft and if you use one of them you don't have to change the bell coupler.
